OCTOBER 2019

Letter from the Director

Be Counted: Hawai'i's nurses excel at leadership, so let's prove it!
Aloha,
Do you know one of Hawai‘i’s hidden secrets? Nurses are both at the forefront of clinical care delivery, and at the decision-making table for many health care delivery and professional organizations.
Why does this matter? The National Nurses on Board Coalition’s (NOBC) mission is to improve the health of communities and the nation through the service of nurses on boards and other bodies. NOBC believes, as do I, that the fiduciary responsibility of governing boards goes beyond financial health to include the quality and safety of care. Nurse leaders can balance the business of health care with clinical and patient outcomes, and provide needed diversity in voices: as patient advocates and as clinical experts often underrepresented on boards, among others.

Congratulations, Hawai'i Nurses!

The Healthcare Association of Hawai'i (HAH) will be holding its annual Awards & Scholarship Gala on October 26, 2019, at Ko'olau Ballrooms in Kaneohe.  At this event, outstanding members of our healthcare workforce will be recognized for their commitment to the profession.  The Center congratulates all awardees and Healthcare Heroes.  We would like to recognize the following members of our nursing community:
  • Brandy Boyce, Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, Hawaii Healthcare Hero
  • Laura Bonilla, Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, Leadership Award

Free Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Training and Professional Development Resources

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) has partnered with SAMHSA’s Providers Clinical Support System (PCSS), to provide free Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) training and professional development resources for NHSC behavioral health clinicians and potential program applicants. Clinicians providing substance use disorder (SUD) or opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment are eligible.

The NHSC-PCSS collaboration connects providers to MAT training in several formats at no cost. Physicians, nurse practitioners (NP), physician assistants (PA) and certified nurse-midwives (CNM) may complete the training and request a Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 (DATA 2000) waiver. With the waiver, clinicians can dispense or prescribe narcotic medications like buprenorphine in settings other than an opioid treatment program (OTP).

Why should clinicians obtain the DATA 2000 waiver?

  • To be a part of the solution to our nation’s opioid epidemic.
  • To help increase access to comprehensive SUD treatment in rural and underserved areas.
  • To become a priority applicant to some NHSC loan repayment programs.
  • To become eligible for the Loan Repayment Program Continuation Contract MAT Award Enhancement as a current NHSC member in an eligible discipline.

The PCSS also offers free mentoring services to support behavioral health providers by telephone, email, or in person.

New Hawai'i School Health Requirements

Beginning July 1, 2020, additional immunizations will be required for students entering childcare or preschool, kindergarten, 7th grade, and post-secondary schools, and all students entering school in Hawaii for the first time, regardless of age. The updated immunization requirements conform with current national recommendations and reflect what occurs in healthcare provider offices and clinics in Hawaii as a standard medical practice.
