Congratulations to the 2019 AONL Award Recipients!

Each year, at our Leadership in Action conference, the American Organization of Nurse Leaders Hawai'i (AONL Hawai'i) recognizes local nurses for their leadership contributions to the nursing workforce.  The Leadership in Action conference is hosted by the Hawai'i Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives, AONL Hawai'i, and HSCN.  We would like to send a huge congratulations to this year's awardees!

HPU DNP Graduate Places 1st for Poster Presentation at National Conference

Hawai'i Pacific University's (HPU) recent DNP graduate, Kendra Spaulding, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC, won 1st place for her poster presentation at the 2019 National Conference for Nurse Practitioners in Acute Care (NPAC) Conference.  Her work focused on smoking cessation interventions in low socioeconomic adult populations.  Congratulations to Dr. Kendra Spaulding and HPU Faculty, Dr. Kathleen Burger for their hard work and achievement!

Medscape Nurse Career Satisfaction Report 2019
Medscape invited practicing licensed nurses from the United States to participate in an online survey about earning and career satisfaction.  The sample included 10,690 nurses who gave their opinion on how satisfied they are with their career choice and what they like and dislike about nursing.

One Possible Solution to the Opioid Crisis in the U.S. Has Been Inexplicably Ignored

The President’s Council of Economic Advisors (CEA) just released a new report on how to beat back America’s opioid crisis. The CEA highlighted as potential solutions measures like curbing illicit drug trafficking, reducing over-prescribing in doctors’ offices, and cracking down on drug distributors fueling the epidemic for profit.

Those are noble goals, to be sure. But the CEA report lacks one crucial element in fighting this crisis: nurse practitioners.  Continue Reading

Dean's Notes: NSNA Survey of New RN Graduates
The National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA) conducts an annual survey of new graduate RN's and published the 2018 results in their Dean's Notes newsletter.  Notable changes from the previous year include:
  • Graduates are finding jobs quicker
  • Loan debt is rising
  • Interests in academic progression to the MS and PhD are declining
  • Intent to obtain the DNP is increasing

The Hawai'i State Center for Nursing is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

REMINDER: Continuing Competency Audits

The Hawai'i Board of Nursing has released the list of individuals that are required to submit proof of completion of a Continuing Competency activity for 2019 license renewals.  Letters were sent out to those individuals via USPS earlier this month.  Didn't receive a letter but want to make sure you're not on the list?  Visit the Continuing Competency section of HBON's website for the full lists.
