Annual Evidence-Based Practice Workshop

The Hawai`i State Center for Nursing’s (HSCN) Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Program focuses on quality of care and patient outcomes through projects set to base nursing practice on evidence. This year's clinician workshop was held on April 12-13, 2017 at the Mānoa Grand Ballroom, Japanese Cultural Center. Eighteen (18) participants attended the workshop with teams from Hawai`i Island and O`ahu. This workshop is designed to provide nurse-led teams of two to three healthcare providers with a solid understanding of EBP and the requisite infrastructure, skills, and resources necessary for successful and sustained practice change. Dynamic didactic presentations were enhanced with hands-on assignments and insights shared by EBP faculty and experienced EBP team members. At the end of the workshop, participants gained a deeper understanding of EBP and developed EBP competencies necessary to improve the quality of healthcare using an evidence-based approach.

Our 2017 EBP teams join a program that has increased evidence-based nursing practice capacity throughout the state of Hawai`i. A total of seventy-three teams consisting of 230 nurses have been trained in EBP from the first cohort in 2009 to the most recent cohort in 2017. Teams have represented twenty acute care and long-term care facilities across the state. EBP teams have contributed to nursing practice by institutionalizing their evidence-based projects within their facilities and disseminating their results. EBP teams have implemented practice guidelines in health care facilities, share their projects through podium or poster presentations at various health care conferences, and published their projects in journals.

A Day in the Life of a NICU Nurse

Hawai`i's KITV Channel 4 did a wonderful job highlighting the clinical skills and compassion it takes to be a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse.  These nurses help children and parents through some of life's hardest moments.  We couldn't be more grateful to have nurses like Heather Hanenberg in our local workforce!
