Measures That Matter

Bluum's Inaugural Annual Report

Since Bluum's inception in late 2014, we have been working to fulfill our ‘20 in 10’ initiative: to create 20,000 high-performing school seats in Idaho over the course of 10 years.

Today, we are pleased to present to you our inaugural Annual Report and share with you the successes of our collective $36 million investment in Idaho’s students, families, and educators. This investment has resulted in the creation of 5,200 new high-performing school seats since the launch of the initiative. These early successes are reflective of the value Idaho’s communities place on quality and innovative education.

We hope you find the time to give this a read and would appreciate any comments or ideas you might share to help us ensure Idaho’s children reach their fullest potential.

Gaps in Academic Achievement Persist for Low-Income & Latino Students

by Angel Gonzalez, Bluum

All students deserve a chance to succeed. Although we who care about education believe this, it is clear that some students do not get the same opportunities as others based on the conditions into which they are born. These data points are jarring when you consider that, statewide, 42 percent of students scored proficient or advanced. In reviewing the data below, you can see that the same story bears out for English Language Arts.

The key recommendation—that a great recess for every student will contribute to students’ overall health, development, and success—is an extraordinarily important recognition, especially coming from the nation’s largest membership organization of health and physical education professionals.

5 Provisions for Success of a DeVos-Trup Voucher Policy
by Mark Berends, MLive

Growing up in Grand Rapids, I benefited from the choices my parents made about my education, attending private schools from pre-K-12 into higher education. As a parent, I have lived in Maryland, Tennessee and Indiana, where I have benefited by the options my wife and I have used for our children's schooling -- traditional public, religious private and Catholic schools as well as homeschooling. As a researcher, a large part of my work over the past decade has been to understand the conditions under which school choice is effective (or not), particularly for historically disadvantaged students.

Preschoolers Teach America's Next Teachers
by Alejandra Matos, Washington Post

Sekani Malcolm was serving coffee and pastries at Dunkin’ Donuts last month, a 20-year-old high school graduate with no plans to go to college and few aspirations for a solid career. He had struggled in school, where he sometimes found trouble, and he was working the part-time job to help support his 3-month-old daughter.

Like many D.C. Public Schools alumni who don’t consider college an option, he didn’t have clear ideas for his future. Then, in January, he went back to preschool.
