EXCITING NEWS! With less than two months remaining, Alpine Animal Services is on track to meet the goal of no euthanasias for overcrowding in 2015. AAS staff, AHS volunteers, and community members working hand-in-hand to find homes for shelter animals have so far managed to avert every overcrowding crisis and maintain a manageable number of dogs & cats in the shelter throughout 2015. Currently, our cattery is full. Please help us stay on track for 2015 and avoid the need for euthanising cats for lack of space!
Brown Dog Gardens & Pretty Bird Salon raised $660 for Alpine Humane Society during their first every Customer Appreciation Event on November 1st. THANK YOU!
Adoption Day! Saturday, Nov 21, 11-2 at the Railroad Park (5th & Hollard) - in conjunction with Alpine ArtWalk. Adopt, volunteer, donate. All shelter animals are HALF PRICE - just $50, includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, & microchip.
Meet Heather, our November Volunteer of the Month! Heather began her volunteer service at AHS in March 2015. From dipping her toes in the water as a once-a-month volunteer dog walker to diving in headlong, Heather has become an integral part of the organization. In addition to making the two-hour drive to attend the monthly AHS meeting on her dog walking days, Heather posts AHS flyers of Alpine shelter dogs all around Terlingua, Lajitas, and the Big Bend National Park area. She submits a shelter dog each week to the Terlingua Moon, and liaises with Texas Cattle Dog Rescue whenever there are Heeler dog breeds at the Alpine shelter. Heather writes bios for dogs so we can post them on social media and printed fliers. She writes grant proposals for AHS, maintaining a Development database along the way. Extending from her grant writing duties, she has also produced a new membership brochure (promoting giving & volunteer opportunities) and new owner surrender form to help collect data for grant proposals and give us much-needed info to help those dogs find a new home. This month, Heather obtained a donation from McCoys for 12 bags of concrete and lumber. In December, she and Mark will be pouring concrete footers underneath the gates of the outdoor dog kennel area so the yard is once again safe & secure. And best of all, Heather adopted Galaxy (now Luka), who, at the time of her adoption, had been at the Alpine shelter longer than any other dog -- 420 days! Heather spends at least 15 hours a week on AHS activities and we feel very fortunate to have her on our team. THANK YOU, Heather!

The shelter cattery is FULL and we must find homes for some of our cats! Help us spread the word. Tell your friends & neighbors we've got kittens & adults, all colors, shapes, sizes, and personalities. Something for everyone! HALF PRICE CATS - EXTENDED THRU 11/21! $50 adoption fee includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, & microchip.

We now have a sign on US 67/US 90 that points to the shelter. A big THANK YOU to David Edwards for allowing us to post the sign on his property, Bill Caruso for donating the dollars, and Jeff Kelsch for installing it!

Alpine Humane Society cannot fulfill its mission without volunteers! A wide variety of opportunities are available. Flexible hours. Whether you can do 20 hours a week or one hour a month, we need you! Currently, we especially need volunteers to socialize our cats (shelter & Thrift Store), Thrift Store assistants, and kennel cleaning help. Contact us if you are interested in volunteering:
Did you see our new bulletin board at Porter's? Next time you're there, stop by the Customer Service Desk and thank Porter's for giving us this prime real estate to advertise adoptable animals! Thanks also to Jeff Kelsch for constructing and hanging the bulletin board. It looks great! (Jeff is our go-to guy for DIY... he also fixed the drain covers in the dog kennels at the shelter so the dogs can once again have toys without them going down the drain. Thanks Jeff!)
Check out our Amazon Wish List! Help us provide much-needed supplies for the city shelter. Everything from dog & cat enrichment toys, food bowls, to disinfecting wipes to keep the place sparkling clean and disease-free. Your donations are tax deductible - just mail us a receipt or drop it off at the shelter. Prefer to shop locally? Check the list, shop local, & drop your donations off at the shelter or AHS Thrift Store.
Alpine Humane Society Thrift Store needs your help! Volunteers help us keep our operating costs low which means more $$ go to help Brewster County animals. Volunteers sort through incoming donations, prepare inventory, stock shelves, and more. Retail experience not required! Flexible shifts available Tue-Sat 10-5 and Monday afternoons. Contact us if this sounds like the job for you! If you can't volunteer, PLEASE SHOP!

Rosemary Karwoski Fritz was a friend of AHS, our Thrift Store employee, and someone dear to us. She passed away on Monday, November 2, 2015. Rosemary had an enormous heart, especially for cats. After her diagnosis of ALS, Rosemary made certain her pet cats and feral colony would be taken care of when she was no longer able care for them. Rain, her favorite indoor cat, adopted from AHS Thrift Store, is back at the Thrift Store, waiting for someone to give her a new home. Memorial services for Rosemary are pending. If you would like to make a donation to Rosemary’s Trust Fund, please stop by the Alpine Humane Society Thrift Store (706 N 5th St, Tue-Sat, 10-5). Rosemary spent years helping the animals of Brewster County and she will be sorely missed by everyone whose life she touched.
