Fall 2020 Wine Club Release of Judge Palmer & Domenica Amato

Dear Wine Club Family,

Greetings from Sonoma County where we have recently begun the tenth harvest of Emmitt-Scorsone Wines - by far the most challenging to date. The global pandemic and multiple wildfires have kept us on our toes, but we are grateful to be safe and hard at work doing what we love.

With each year that passes on our winemaking journey, the word "vintage" takes on greater significance. The date on the bottle doesn't merely represent minor differences in weather patterns and subtle stylistic distinctions in the resulting wines; it carries the added significance of the events that impacted us and our wine country neighbors each year.

While the story of the 2020 vintage is still being written (and we promise there is plenty to be optimistic about!), we have wines from the previous four harvests to share with you in this shipment. Each recalls for us in some way our experiences during the year in which they were grown:
  • A picture perfect 2016 produced some of the best Napa Cabernets of an epic decade. Our "flagship" Beckstoffer To Kalon bottling shines in this vintage, showcasing the power and complexity of this special vineyard.
  • Usually blended from several vineyards, our estate grapes dominate the blend for the 2017 Vintage Select Cabernet Sauvignon, when smoke prevented the harvest of some later ripening sites. Its rich red fruit and silky mouthfeel weave an enchanting tale about this trying year.
  • Another classic California vintage arrived in 2018, ideal to show off the diversity of Sonoma County's many growing regions - our Chardonnay from Russian River, Grenache from Dry Creek, and "Gusto Bianco" white blend all display tension and depth.
  • 2019 produced a bumper crop of Grenache from our estate vineyard. We took the opportunity given by mother nature's abundance to flex our winemaking muscles and create something a little bit different with the fresh, lively, and fruit-forward "Fresco."
Additional details about your shipment are listed below, but as always, feel free to reach out to either of us directly with any questions; we are always happy to reconnect with club members to discuss our wines and help you customize your box should you wish to do so.

Thank you all so much for your continued support - your concern, kind words and wine purchases over the last six months have truly sustained and inspired us. Enjoy your wines and come see us in wine country soon!

Best Wishes,
Palmer Emmitt & Michael Scorsone
Wines In Your Shipment

Bacigalupi Vineyard, Russian River Valley
$44 for club members (regularly $55)
From perhaps the most famous Chardonnay vineyard in the new world, the Bacigalupi family has been growing amazing fruit since conquering the 1976 Judgement of Paris tasting. Rich and creamy with well-integrated oak character, it will delight all palates. Only 101 cases produced.

Domenica Amato 2018 "Gusto Bianco"
Viognier-Grenache Blanc-Fiano Blend, Sonoma County

$35
An intensely floral, bracingly mineral, and richly textured white blend, the Gusto Bianco was fermented and/or aged in a variety of vessels - stainless steel, neutral French oak, clay amphora, and concrete egg. The complex layers of flavor unfold as it opens, so we recommend a bit of time in a decanter for full enjoyment. Only 94 cases produced.

Domenica Amato 2019 "Fresco"
"Chillable" Grenache, Dry Creek Valley

$24 for club members  (regularly $30)
"Fresco" is a chillable, light-bodied red wine made in the Beaujolais-style using carbonic maceration. It is fresh and fruity yet rustic, and a wonderful accompaniment to a backyard BBQ, pizza night or Thanksgiving dinner. Only 83 cases produced.

Domenica Amato 2018 Grenache
Estate Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley

$40
Our second bottling of 100% estate grown Grenache, this wine is dripping with sun-drenched black-plum and cherry flavors, as well as refined layers of black tea, crushed clay and spice. Its elegance, soft tannins and juicy constitution make it ready to drink now, but it should gain depth through at least 2025. Only 175 cases produced.

Judge Palmer 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon
Vintage Select, Sonoma County
$36 for club members (regularly $45)
As Master Sommelier Ian Cauble wrote, "the simplest way to present the Judge Palmer “Vintage Select” Cabernet is to say that, if I were tasting it blind, I’d be expecting to pay $75-$100 for it. Not $45." Composed of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon from our estate vineyard balanced with 4% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot, this complex wine shows rich red fruit, layered texture, and a hint of loamy earth - the perfect expression of Sonoma County terroir. Only 436 cases produced.

Judge Palmer 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon
Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, Napa Valley
$120 for club members (regularly $150)
Perhaps the most historic and revered vineyard site in all of California, Beckstoffer To Kalon has produced world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for generations of Napa Valley vintners. Our 2016 was recently rated 93 points by James Molesworth from Wine Spectator who wrote "Ripe and bright in feel, with racy red currant and raspberry coulis flavors leading the way. Invigorating savory, briar and sweet tobacco notes fill in throughout. A subtle apple wood frame on the finish lets the fruit mingle." Only 175 cases produced.

Intern 2020: Austin Returns

Back in 2016 we hired our first crush intern - Austin Bregante. At the time a senior wine marketing major at Sonoma State, making wine was not really in Austin's career plans; but we promised him a broad look at the operation of a small winery from production to sales & marketing and he embraced the opportunity with gusto. Inspired by his experience with us, he has embarked on a winemaking odyssey since graduation, working for some of the top biodynamic producers in Sonoma County and Austria the past three years. Unable to return to Europe this year due to the Covid pandemic, he reached out about working the harvest with us. We jumped at the chance to bring Austin's work ethic and infectious spirit back to the winery for another crush, with the added bonus that this time around he actually knows what he's doing!
