Who's Behind Releasing Ministry Alliance

Releasing Ministry Alliance's co-founders, Vonn New and Viv Hawkins, are grateful for the support of our home faith communities, Bullshead/Oswego (NYYM) and Central Philadelphia (PhYM) respectively, and the minutes of support for Releasing Ministry from several monthy meetings, and Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting. More minutes are being considered!

Lee Haring and Janet Carter of Bulls Head Meeting serve on Vonn's anchor committee. We are also grateful for the on-going spiritual accountability offered by Mona Cardell, Shan Cretin, Lola Georg, and Kevin Taylor who meet monthly with Viv as appointed by Central Philadelphia Monthly Meeting.
These CPMM Friends have agreed to serve with Viv on the initial board of Releasing Ministry Alliance as it obtains it 501(c)3 incorporation status. Each of them have contributed to this campaign financially, through prayer, and offering their strong experience among Friends in the diverse areas of non-profit operations, information technologies, and financial stewardship, to name a few.

In a recent interview for Releasing Ministry Alliance's upcoming promotional video, Shan shared,
"Even giving a small amount of money to a good and worthy cause, helps us have ownership in it, helps us see our connection in it, and offers support of a very important kind to a minister.”

With these Friends' generous and expert assistance and the $7,600 raised to date, we're on our way to the $16,000 needed for these purposes:

  • $10,000 to develop and host the full Releasing Ministry Alliance website and create channels to receive funds on behalf of participating ministries,
  • $ 1,500 to form the 501(c)3 organization,and
  • $ 4,500 for start-up operations such as audit, office supplies, printing, and other organizational expenses.
Lyman Fund grants of $5,000 supplement our current crowdfunding campaign.

We've received offers of pro bono services for legal, technical, copyright, editorial, internet security, administrative, and design services so far and extend our sincere gratitude to those several donors.

Please visit gofundme.com/releasingministry to see who else has contributed financially, read their well wishes, and donate yourself!

Friends Niyonu Spann and Lisa Graustein's ministries continue with Beyond Diversity 101 RACE. Learn more about this powerful training on June 19-23, 2015 in Lichtfield, CT.  God willing, a future issue will feature more on this great work!

Our new image of chrysalis and butterflies replaces "Freedom" sculpture. At this time, we're aware of the metanoia possible through supporting ministries, the effect of imaginal cells on the body of which they are a part, and the effect of butterfly wings flapping. Thanks to Creative Commons for such beauty and inspiration as this!

The Undoing Racism Group formed during the 2014 Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (PhYM) Annual Sessions, when a Friend of color (among others) observed that PhYM’s diversity does not reflect the diversity of our neighborhoods, and called on PhYM to address the racism that still persists in our Society.

In response, a multiracial group of Friends came together at summer sessions and 40+ members have continued to meet since, holding honest conversations and seeking way forward for PhYM and its faith communities under the able clerking team of Lucy Duncan, Vanessa Julye, and Noah White.

The Undoing Racism Group
shares a collective vision and proposes actions which may work to develop the kinds of beloved faith communities we wish for our Monthly, Quarterly, and Yearly Meetings, along with other bodies under our care.

Members of Undoing Racism Group have submitted a slate of workshops focused on race for PhYM summer sessions and are sponsoring two pre-sessions events to better prepare the body to engage this work:

1) A retreat for PhYM f/Friends of color and their immediate families to be held June 19-21, 2015 currently planned at Pendle Hill with the purpose of providing a space and time for participants to come to know each other more fully, offer support to each other, and, perhaps, provide input to the Undoing Racism Group.

2) A showing and facilitated discussion of the film “I am not racist, am I?” open to all members of PhYM at Friends Center on Saturday, June 27, 2-4PM.  A trailer for the film can be seen at notracistmovie.com

Total cost for both events is $7500 of which $3800 has been raised from monthly meetings and individuals as of 4/26/15.  Additional contributions are still being sought and can be sent to the Quaker meetings providing fiscal sponsorship as follows.

For the film and discussion, donations should be payable to Media Friends Meeting and sent to Media Friends Meeting,
125 W 3rd St, Media, PA 19063 and marked for "Undoing Racism Film."

For the retreat, contributions should be payable to Central Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, 1515 Cherry St, Philadelphia, PA 19102 and marked “Ministry to help the Religious Society of Friends become more welcoming to people of color - RETREAT”

Undoing Racism Group also asks your prayers that Friends attend to eradicating racism within the Religious Society of Friends and the wider world.  The beloved community of God calls us to this, surely.
