Promoting the Promise

Interest group and conversations at FGC

In its first week, 154 people have viewed "Introducing Releasing Ministry Alliance." The 5 minute video is publicizing the Alliance and amplifying the message of these weekly mailings and our printed materials.

A variety of Friends committed to Friends ministry share their views on ministry, releasing ministry, and the promise of Releasing Ministry Alliance.

At FGC Gathering and via on-line communications, our board members have been meeting with people interested in the project and experts in ministry, fundraising, and publicity.

An interest group dedicated to discussing Releasing Ministry Alliance was held Thursday July 9, 1:30-3pm. We shared our interests in releasing ministry, watched the "Introducing..." video, heard about the status of Releasing Ministry Alliance's campaign, and compared our design to that of the Unitarian Universalist crowd-funding website, Faithify.org.

During and FGC Traveling Ministry Program event, Deborah Fisch was kind to inform Friends there about our deliverables: a directory of ministries online, the ability to invite a minister to one's congregation, channels to facilitate donations to ministries, opportunities to request and offer prayer for ministries, and offers of home hospitality and other in-kind contributions.

Meanwhile, we continue behind-the-scenes creating the website, ministry database, and the non-profit organization to sustain the day-to-day and long-term operations.

Donors have contributed more than $8,755 toward our start-up goal of $16,000. Pledges have been received for an additional $1,200. We thank these Friends and those who offer pro bono services for our legal incorporation, spiritual accountability, prayer, outreach, and technical and artistic expertise.

For Releasing Ministry Alliance to succeed Friends from all branches of Quakerism are needed. We're grateful to staff of New England Yearly Meeting for sharing the video. We invite you to watch it on our start-up page or below, share it with others, tell us your interests related to releasing ministry at our contact page, or contribute at the link below.

Congratulations to Zachary Moon (Camas Friends Church) who on June 29th became ABD, in his PhD study in religion and psychology at Illiff School of Theology. He also gave an inspiring author talk at the FGC Gathering.

As a Quaker and commissioned military chaplain, Zachary says, "Life can take some surprising turns! Growing up a Quaker, war and military service was rarely talked about without negative associations and judgements. As I got older, I felt I needed to learn more than what the political debate about war had to offer; I wanted to build relationships with those on the other side. And the more I did, the more I came to understand the complexity and importance of these issues. Ideological commitments and beliefs concerning war are valuable, but when they keep us apart, both sides are losing."

In May 2015, Zachary published Coming Home: Ministry that Matters with Veterans and Military Families (Chalice Press). The book can be used as a study guide for congregations. He says, "[It] is structured so that it can be useable in a variety of ways ranging from personal reading and reflection to small group discussion. Coming Home is more than a book; it is a call to community mobilization. Whether you are a veteran, military family member, or civilian, make room for opportunities to listen and talk with others in your community. These conversations are the groundwork for dynamic and powerful ministries."

Connect with Zachary at cominghomechurch.com and follow him on Twitter @ChaplainMoon. He writes for Huffington Post and offers these pieces for our consideration.
