Abundant Blessings from Near & Far

Central Philadelphia Monthly Meeting’s Committee on Gifts and Leadings awarded Releasing Ministry Alliance $1,000. This grant, a similar one from Poughkeepsie Friends Meeting, a matching grant from William Penn Foundation, and a few generous gifts from individuals will go toward website development.  Our deep gratitude goes to the Friends who made these funds available.

In addition to continuing with website development, we’ve been continuing to publicize Releasing Ministry Alliance, interacting with people carrying ministries, learning from people offering similar services such as the Unitarian Universalist’s Faithify, developing resource materials, and coordinating with other Friends to support ministries.

This unique Quaker project is an outgrowth of a concern taken on by Avis Wanda McClinton, one in which other folks have been inspired to join in an independent ad hoc committee. The marker pictured above memorializes the spot in the burial ground of Upper Dublin Monthly Meeting (Abington Quarter, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting) where travelers on the Underground Railroad are known to have been buried. A historical marker was also placed at the site.

Friends United Meeting continues to seek a full-time North American programme officer for their Africa Ministries Office (AMO). A slide show of the AMO tells what has been accomplished since AMO was founded in 2005, where is it headed next, and 13 points related to why it exists. Are you called to join in this work?

When Tom and Liz Gates spoke with me of their call to return to Africa, I asked if Releasing Ministry Alliance might help in any way. Tom said, “We can always use prayer.”

Now, Tom is serving as medical director of a rural hospital in Malawi with Partners in Health. Liz shares on Facebook snippets of their lives there. On Feb 19, she wrote, “The face of poverty can be heartbreaking. Tom has described his work here as grueling... My hope is that with time, effort and resources the system here can be transformed and all people will have access to the basic care they need. May it be so.” As Tom’s You Are My Witnesses Pendle Hill pamphlet is released, let us join in holding him, Liz, and those they serve in prayer.  Tom and Liz previously served at Friends Lugulu Hospital and among Kenyan Friends.
