Hockey Ireland Coronavirus (COVID-19) UPDATE No. 2
12 March 2020

As the possibility of the COVID-19 virus spreading in Ireland increases, Hockey Ireland is continually monitoring the situation.

Hockey Ireland continues to follow the advice of the Government and Sport Ireland and has noted the announcement by An Taoiseach this morning that some measures will come into effect from tomorrow morning until the 29th March 2020, with schools, colleges and childcare facilities closing from tomorrow (Friday 13th March).

The Hockey Ireland Board, after consultation with its branches, has decided the following in the interest of the health and safety of the hockey community and all people on the island of Ireland:

  • Hockey Ireland is suspending all hockey activity with immediate effect until the 29th March and is directing all branches, clubs and schools to do the same.  All hockey activity including training and education across clubs and schools must now cease. We understand that this decision is disappointing to all hockey players, coaches, officials, volunteers, and supporters, but in light of the circumstances, Hockey Ireland believes this is in our members’ best interests.

  • The above will not apply to the Senior Women’s team, who are in preparation for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

  • Alternative arrangements for league and cup matches will be reviewed by Hockey Ireland in coming weeks and decisions will be communicated as appropriate.

  • The Hockey Ireland offices are situated on the UCD campus which will be closing this evening, and from tomorrow, 13th March, all staff will be operating from their homes.  We apologise for this disruption, however staff continue to have access to our server remotely and are set up to respond to emails as usual.

As the situation is changing very quickly, we will continue to closely follow developments and issue further information approaching the 29th March Date.

Please keep safe. For further information on Covid-19:

Harlequins Boys Senior League v Atlantic Academy

Harlequins welcomed Atlantic academy to Farmers Cross on Sunday evening for the latest round of their league campaign. With a win against Midleton on Friday night ensuring they were involved in the cup final on Paddy's day the focus was on the Munster senior league and ensuring that there would be no slip ups with their drive for the double.

The game was only 3 minutes old when Quins got their opener. Sam was on hand to finish from close range when he tapped in following a corner breakdown where Adam fired low across the keeper. Atlantic pushed forward and threatened on a few occasions on the counter attack but Quins defence held strong. Constant pressure from the home teams forwards created many chances but they could not beat the away teams keeper who made some really good saves. Quins had to wait until the last minute of the quarter before Jamie fired in a rocket from the top of the circle. That goal seemed to calm the home team down and began to move the ball well creating chances for Adam and Sean at the back post but neither could add to the quarter time score of 2-0

The second quarter started similar to the first with plenty of pressure from the home team but struggled to beat the in form Atlantic Academy keeper. Quins still had to stay tuned in at the back as the away team were always a threat on the counter attack. The home team had to wait until the 9th minute for their third with a lovely goal from a corner move where Joe fired low and across the keeper for the first of Joes five for the match. Joe was on hand on the last minute of the quarter to add the final touch to a counter attack that stemmed the full length of the pitch in four passes. The half finished 4-0 to Harlequins

The home team had to wait until the 12th minute of the third quarter to add to the score when Joe rifled in a great backhand shot into the corner. Joe was on hand again in the last minute of the quarter with another rocket after good build up play. Quins dominated the final quarter and further goals from Joe, Sam , Adam, Rob and Sean putting the icing on the cake. The only blot on a fantastic weekend of hockey for this team was when the away team scored from a corner in the last minute when Dylan cleaned out forwards ,defenders and all around him when left as last man versus the quick away forwards.. It was no more than the away team deserved as they kept on battling regardless of the score and kept working for each other. Well done and best of luck for the rest of the season. Well done to the Quins lads, a fantastic weekend of hockey where you played really well and scored some great goals. Look forward to the cup final and put your best effort into every training session from now until the end of the season. Hopefully then you will have your rewards.
