Heads up - The Los Angeles Whip Cracking Convention takes place on Jan 6-7, 2018, its third year. And oh, what a gathering it will be!
Hosted by record-busting Adam Winrich (24 Guinness World Records!), the annual whip gathering this year features special guests, workshops, and contests - with enviable prizes for the top competitors.
Things get started at 10 am Jan 6, 2018 at McCambridge Park, 1515 North Glenoaks Boulevard, Burbank, California 91504. The event closes at 6 pm on Jan 7.
Contests are on Saturday, workshops are on Sunday. Contests include:
       - One-whip Freestyle competition
       - Two-whip Freestyle competition
       - Speed and Accuracy competition
       - Bullwhip Fast Draw Competition
       - Long whip competition
A complete list of the rules for each contest is posted on the Convention's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/208457429693329/
Signup is from 11 am to 12 noon on Saturday, and each competitor must sign up in person.
On Sunday at 10 am, the award-winning whip maker Peter Thorndike demonstrates how he designs and builds his impeccable (and powerful) stock whips.
Along with Winrich, announced whip makers and performers include Evan Fava, Casey Tyler, Nick Schrader, Daniel Borton, Paul Nolan, Todd Rex, Daniel Hoff, Aaron Bonk, Matt Franta, Brett Copes, and Anthony and Mary DeLongis.

Choi Blasts into the Record Books

April Jennifer Choi has a lot of people smiling over at Guinness World Records she not only set new whip records, she did it with style.
According to a Guinness World Records press release, she achieved
Most Jenga blocks removed by a whip in one minute with a total of four in her home of Peoria, Illinois.
A seemingly unstoppable force, the US resident earned the record for Most stock whip cracks on a slackline in one minutethat same day, with 127.
Days after accomplishing two Guinness World Records titles, the expert whipper succeeded in completing a record trifecta, earning the title for the Most eggs broken with a whip in 30 seconds at 17.
Michael Empric surprised the talented whip artist with an official certificate for her a title she had attempted earlier in the week: Most newspapers split using a bullwhip in one minute. At 22 newspapers, April is now a four-time record holder, and eager to break more.

Looking Back & Looking Ahead

At this time of year, Mary and I reflect on all we have to be grateful for.
And it always comes down to this: We are rich in our friends.  That means our customers, our hosts at events, the folks who come to our workshops, classes and performances, the subscribers to this newsletter, the fans and fellow-travelers, and so many others - the list could truly go on.
While it has never been easy to be an artist in this world - especially with such esoteric skills - your generosity, support and friendship have made it possible for us to do our work. And for that, we are profoundly grateful to you.
And if you'd like to continue to help, I invite you to donate $5 (or $100!) to The Dante Travel Fund, which pays for tolls, gas, plane tickets, McDonalds' burgers on the road, etc. Every bit makes a big difference!
I hope we have a chance to meet down the road -- and even if we don't, let's stay in touch anyway. It's a big world, and anything is possible. And we've already got some interesting plans for the year ahead!
       Be seeing you!
