LA Whip Convention No. 4 Set for Jan. 5-6:
Contests, Coaching, & Cameraderie

The 2019 L.A. Whip Convention kicks off at 10am Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019 at McCambridge Park, 1515 North Glenoaks Boulevard, Burbank, California 91504. Activities are expected to go to 5pm.

Competitions will include Single Whip Freestyle, Double Whip Freestyle, Speed and Accuracy, Bullwhip Fast Draw, and the Long Whip Cracking competition. And it's only $20 to enter.
Saturday's signup opens at 11 am, and competitions start at 1 pm.
Sunday will see whip workshops at Buena Vista Park at 2450-2848 W. Riverside Dr., Burbank CA 911505. Starting at 10am, workshops will include Handle Plaiting and Patterns with Peter Thorndike; Australian Whip Cracking with Emiliqua East; Whip Tosses with Todd Rex; and How to Do the Four Corners with event host Adam Winrich, a 25-time Guinness World Record holder.

This year, there will be a WhipCon LA belt buckle awarded to the whip cracker with the highest combined scores in the Single and Double whip Freestyle.
Winrich writes, "In both competitions, the whip cracker gets one minute to show off to the judges. Each whip cracker must first perform 3 cattleman’s cracks, 3 fast figure 8s, and 3 volleys (six cracks in each volley). Then use the rest of the minute for your own routine. Points will be deducted for missed cracks."
This year's costume contest theme is "Western."  Dakota Winrich writes, "Whether you go old school or modern we want to see your best cowpoke gear! We hope that having a theme this year will make it more cohesive and a bit easier to judge. Extra points will be given for wearing your costume while participating in any of the competitions."

Results will be printed in the next Bullwhip Newsletter.
FYI: The event's Facebook page lists 46 people as going and 117 as interested, so there should be a good turnout. Enjoy the day!

Western Stage Props presents Wild West Arts Fest May 2-4
The first three-day Wild West Arts Fest is set for May 2-4, 2019 at The Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
The festival will feature classes on four Western art forms: gun spinning and handling, knife throwing, trick roping - and whip cracking, of course!
Event organizer Kyle Petersen, owner of Western Stage Props, writes, "There will be open practice time, skill sharing sessions, lighthearted competitions, and nightly events, including a dinner show. It's a don't-miss opportunity!"
Petersen adds, "The overall focus of the festival is geared towards learning new skills, spreading the love of the Western Arts, creating new friendships, expanding and diversifying the Western community and honoring our history."
Teachers include trick rope expert Chris McDaniel, skilled whip master and coach Gery Deer, legendary knife thrower The Great Throwdini, and Western performing superstar Loop Rawlins

"To ensure a successful festival, we are capping overall attendance this year," Petersen says. "We encourage everyone interested to register as early as possible to secure your spot."
The festival fee of $350 per person entitles each attendee to:
  • Unlimited classes Thursday-Saturday
  • Open Question and Answer panel with your teachers and experts
  • Thursday night meet and greet event
  • Friday night Young Guns Show
  • Saturday night Gunslingers’ Costume Ball and Legends Dinner Show

AlphaWhips Moves to Germany

AlphaWhips' Chris Fradley writes, "The time has come to start the final preparations for my move to Germany, where myself and my workshop will be relocated. The move is due to take place on December 27/28.  Therefore, custom orders will be temporarily suspended until the move has been completed.
"Interested clients can contact me to discuss projects that can take place after the move is completed if they wish to do so. Orders for items that are in stock and ready to ship shall remain open until the end of December 15, when the workshop will be dismantled.
"The business will reopen a few weeks later once the establishment process is completed.
Thank you to everyone who has made the business possible, and I hope to continue to satisfy your whip related needs come the new year!
       "Chris"

Good Job!

Well, Whaddyaknow?
Did you know there's a website about Bullwhip Music? (Click the pic!)
What a strange, difficult, wonderful year it has been!
       I've launched my
GoFundMe campaign to get a new computer to produce a video version of "Let's Get Cracking: The How-To Book of Bullwhip Skills." I need $2,000 - I have $203 donated. Frankly, I need your help here,  if you'd care to throw a fiver or a Franklin into the pot as I ring my little bell. 'Tis the season...!
I will spend a few weeks in Europe in Spring 2019. If you know someone or a group that would like to have some quality face-time with me, drop me an email (dante@bullwhip.net).
It's perhaps too soon to say this, but I am entering into a collaboration with Western Stage Props. More on this will be announced at the Wild West Arts Fest in May.
The past few weeks I've been working with a film maker here in Minneapolis who is exploring an alternative view of the creative process (grants and contracts and everything!). As things progress, I will keep you updated. Yes, there are bullwhips involved!
         I've cleansed and updated the
Bullwhip Index of Whip Makers, Performers and Teachers. If you know of a whip maker and bullwhip artist I have not yet discovered, let me know.
The Bullwhip Newsletter is still free to you, thanks to its unpaid staff (Me), so if you'd like to contribute a story idea, photo, news lead to this newsletter, drop me a line. I am also not averse about running an ad or two, as long as it is truthful. Query for details.
Our subscriber count is now into the 400s; let your friends and relatives know about the Bullwhip Newsletter so we can watch that number climb!
Have a fabulous and safe Holiday Season, and we'll see you, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed,  in January!
       Best thoughts,
