Hi everyone,

There's a new study about endometriosis, IBS, and nickel allergy and that got me thinking again about endometriosis and immune dysfunction. Scroll down for the nickel paper and also my revised blog post and endometriosis and the immune system.

Also, keep reading for my regular feature of New Research and Findings which looks at how varicose veins could be a sign you're not getting enough vitamin K2.

The possible role of nickel allergy in endometriosis

I just came across a fascinating new Italian study linking endometriosis to nickel allergy and specifically to nickel in food. It's a small study but got impressive results with 90% of endometriosis-sufferers testing positive for a nickel allergy.

Just to be clear, the study is NOT saying that nickel causes endo -- only that nickel allergy may play a role in some endometriosis symptoms especially when there are also gut symptoms. (Nickel allergy has previously been correlated with IBS.)

The main sign of nickel allergy is contact dermatitis from jewellery.

Foods that are high in nickel include tomatoes, beans, chocolate, wheat, corn, onion, garlic, shellfish, nuts, and tinned foods.

Read the study 👉🏽 "Irritable Bowel Syndrome-Like Disorders in Endometriosis: Prevalence of Nickel Sensitivity and Effects of a Low-Nickel Diet. An Open-Label Pilot Study." (And reply to this email if you want the full-text paper.)

Endometriosis? Treat the immune system

Endometriosis is not a hormonal condition. It’s affected by estrogen but it’s not caused by estrogen or “estrogen dominance.”

Instead, endometriosis is a whole-body inflammatory and immune disease, and possibly a microbial disease.

What does that mean for treatment? Continue reading...

Men have a biological clock too. Male age always has a negative effect on fertility, even when men partner with younger women.

A new commentary calls for endometriosis to be treated as a gynecological subspecialty.
