Welcome to the January 2017 WCRP News! Happy New Year from the WCRP Joint Planning Staff.

In this issue David Carlson talks about what the unprecedented changes in the climate this year mean for us as a research community. Over coming issues we will be highlighting various groups within WCRP, starting with CliC. Discover what three questions leading researchers believe are key for future climate science and what early career scientists deem the frontiers of Earth system science. Meet our two prize awardees - of the WCRP/WWRP International Prize for Model Development and the WCRP/GCOS International Data Prize 2016 - and two promising new leaders in climate science..

Looking ahead

It is highly likely that 2016 will be looked back on at the year the climate changed, both in the political and meteorological sense. David Carlson, Director of WCRP talks about what the current environment means for us as we look ahead as a research community. Read more here.

Sharpening our view on climate research

Sharpening our view on climate research

Leading climate researchers recently met to discuss future directions and needs in climate science. The outcome was three questions that, in their view, represent current and future priorities for climate research:
  1. Where does the carbon go?
  2. How does weather change with climate?
  3. How does climate influence the habitability of the Earth and its regions?

Meet one of our core projects: CliC

The Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) project is one of the core projects of WCRP, serving as the focal point for climate science related to the cryosphere, its variability and change, and interaction with the broader climate system. To find out more, CliC here!

Earth System Science Frontiers - an ECS perspective

The YESS community is pleased to announce that the YESS paper 'Earth System Science Frontiers - an ECS perspective' has been published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS), currently available as an early online release. In the paper, an active group of young Earth system scientists describe their long-term vision of the frontiers of Earth system science, paving the way towards an integrated understanding of the Earth system. The paper is an outcome of the World Meteorological Organization-funded Early Career Researchers Workshop at the German Weather service in Offenbach, Germany, in October 2015 and focuses on four frontiers: seamless Earth system prediction, communication, user-driven science, and interdisciplinarity.

Dr. Kate Willett awarded the WCRP/GCOS International Data Prize 2016

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Kate Willett from the Met Office Hadley Centre, UK, has been awarded the WCRP/GCOS International Data Prize 2016. The Prize Committee, consisting of representatives from WCRP, the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) and their joint panels the Atmospheric Observation Panel for Climate (AOPC), Terrestrial Observation Panel for Climate (TOPC) and Ocean Observations Panel for Climate (OOPC), was greatly impressed by her outstanding contribution in supporting the development of data sets for climate research. More information on the prize can be found here.

In the spotlight - promising new leaders in climate science

WCRP promotes current and future leadership in climate science, making particular efforts to support and engage early career researchers from all regions in the world, toward a sustainable climate research community. In the effort of promoting excellent science undertaken by early career scientists, WCRP would like to introduce you to Jian Peng from China and Martin Jucker from Switzerland. Find out more about their work and their vision for the future of climate science in our full article: In the spotlight – promising future leaders in climate science.

Communications update

The WCRP website upgrade is now complete. I really hope that you find the new layout both aesthetically pleasing and easy to navigate. Improvements to existing pages will be ongoing. Please email me with any feedback and alert me to any issues that you encounter.

If you have not done so already, please respond to our call to complete our communications survey. Being able to effectively target improvements in current communications will benefit us all and the future of the entire Programme. Find the survey here.
