Directors' Forum News & Updates

Welcome New DFC Board

From left to right: Grégoire Lefebvre, Kathy Stewart, Anthony Piscitelli, Tanya Gracie, Ken Chan and Leo Racette.
The Directors' Forum Co-operative is thrilled to welcome the new Board of Directors! With four seats up for nomination and four nominations received, the candidates were recently acclaimed at the Annual General Meeting held at the Hilton Mississauga/Meadowvale on Friday, November 26.

We also said goodbye to retiring Board member Tim Foster, who contributed a wealth of experience and expertise as Director of Northern Credit Union, to the help elevate the mission of the Directors Forum since he joined in 2012. Tim's enthusiasm and passion for director education will be missed, and we are grateful for having had him on the board for all this time.

We also welcomed new Director Grégoire Lefebvre, who joins us from the Caisse Alliance. We are excited to work with Greg, and the fresh perspectives he will be able to offer the organization moving forward.

We greatly appreciate the continued commitment and contributions of Kathy, Anthony, Tanya, Ken and Leo, and look forward to working together again.

Leo has accepted to be the new Chair (taking over from Anthony), Tanya will continue as Vice-Chair and Kathy as Treasurer, and Greg has accepted the role of Board Secretary.

The new Board will reconvene in February to begin making plans for the 2022 program year, which will include a four-part virtual conference series (between February and June 2022), an AGM and fall conference (date and location to be announced in the coming weeks).

Conference Highlights

110 individuals gathered both in-person (82 delegates) and virtually (28 delegates) at the Directors' Forum's first-ever hybrid event! It was wonderful being together again, but also to be able to include and interact with those delegates and speakers who joined us online.

This year's sessions explored the board's role in societal transformation, the importance of leveraging our unique values as co-operatives, and the impact that collaboration between co-operatives can have in rebuilding a stronger, more equitable society. The half-day CUDA® CE session led participants in a role-play of a board meeting for an organization facing a series of challenges. Delegates received plenty of great tools and information throughout the day and a half conference, to bring back to their boards for further discussion.

Eighteen amazing speakers - constituted of experts from credit unions, co-operatives, law firms, academia and other stakeholder groups - shared their knowledge and experiences with the audience, who were also asked to collaborate and engage in table discussions and virtual group chats. There was also plenty of time for networking during the breaks between each session - a great way to digest the information and create new opportunities for collaboration!

Check out the photos from the event on our Facebook page. We are grateful to photographer Huw Morgan, for capturing all the action and excitement throughout the day on Friday!

Graphic illustrator Kerr Smith also joined us at the conferece this year to create an awesome visual representation of the key insights from the conference sessions, as presented by Alisdair Smith at the wrap-up session. The Board greatly appreicates Kerr's in-kind contribution to the Directors’ Forum this year.

And last but certainly not least, we'd like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all the organizations who sponsored this year’s conference; we truly appreciate your contribution to making this yet another successful event.

Virtual Governance Session 1
The Board's Role in Member Representation
February 2, 2022 from 10:30am - 12:00pm EST
Boards of Directors are expected to focus on strategy while leaving operations to management. Yet, when Directors speak to their members, the concerns they hear are typically focused on day-to-day issues. This session will share ideas from school board trustees and credit unions on how to solicit feedback from members, which can help provide strategic insights. In
preparation for this session, you are asked to complete this survey to share insights from your credit union, co-operative or mutual organization. Registration is now open - please read instructions carefully before you do so.
Stay tuned for more details about the 2022 virtual governance series in the New Year!
