September 4, 2019
Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,
I am so glad you are all here! Whether you are a student, parent, family member, parishioner, alum or alumni family, neighbor, or friend, each of you is such an important part of our community. While I love summer, I am always excited to start another year. I am so glad each of you is her, a part of our community, ready to continue the important work we have to do.
As we start this year, you will notice our bulletin board by the main office reads, "Welcome one another, for the glory of God, as Christ welcomed you"
from Romans 15:7. Each year is an opportunity for us to reaffirm our commitment to the values and expected behaviors that shape our community. The beginning of the year can be a fresh start for committing to inclusiveness, trust, honest communication, and partnership, not only between families and the school, but also amongst each other. At our in-service last week, we focused on the fact that all students are all of our students, from the moment they enter ASB until the moment they graduate. The same is true for us as parents and families. This is our community and each of our responsibility for the duration of our time at ASB – and often, even beyond that. It is in this spirit that I ask each family to take some time to read the updated Family Handbook, available on our website. In your Wednesday envelope today, there is a form that all families are required to sign to acknowledge their commitment to the policies outlined in the handbook
. If you are a two-parent household, we ask that both parents sign the form. Please return these to the main office.
In the spirit of welcome, I have attached a letter from our new counselor Mrs. Christy Dahl. I know many of you were able to meet her at the Open House and BBQ and/or yesterday. Please read her introduction here
and join me in welcoming her in this important role!
As we all know with the start of the school year, there a million details to which we all pay attention and try to manage. Uniforms, lunches, snacks, homework, drop off and pick up, supplies, earlier bedtimes, and more. One of the things I have found we do well at ASB is communicate the many things you need to know as a family, from events, dates, locations, and other items that help you navigate the year. We will continue to communicate these on a regular basis and the most common way is this newsletter. I am asking that everyone make the effort to read the newsletter each week.
Generally, everything you need to know is right here. This is particularly important this year, as we have to rearrange and be flexible on the fly in order to have construction continue smoothly.
I am looking forward to the many opportunities we have to see each other in the next few weeks. Fall is busy, but all of these events are more than worthwhile!
- Curriculum Nights – Mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 11th (PreK-5) and Tuesday, September 17th (6-8) for 7:00 PM in the gym. We will begin promptly with an overview of the year, then head to classrooms for two sessions with your children’s homeroom team. The Ridge is ready for you to head over after Curriculum Night to visit and connect with your fellow families.
- Parent Education – We have two awesome opportunities coming up this fall. I would love to see as many parents as possible at both.
- Monday, September 30th – We have the privilege of having Andrew McPeak, co-author of Marching Off the Map, coming to Seattle. He will be doing a workshop with staff in the afternoon, then offering a parent education evening at 7:00 PM. He will be speaking about Generation Z – our kids! – and the strengths and challenges they face in a very different world than the one in which we grew up. He is a well-renowned author and speaker, and this is truly an unique opportunity.
- Wednesday, October 16th – Dr. Delaney Ruston, creator of the film Screenagers, will be releasing her sequel, The Next Chapter, at the beginning of October. We are fortunate to be piloting this film focused on mental health, anxiety, and depression. Please join us for this screening.
- Community Building – We have some important events to help build community and connection this fall.
- Assumption Parish Picnic – Sunday, September 8th
- St. Bridget Elephant Stampede & Picnic – Sunday, September 15th
- ASB Family Dance – Friday, October 4th
- Halloween Carnival – Sunday, October 27th
Finally, while the beginning of the year is generally time for welcome and not good bye, we do have a good bye to say in our community. Kelley Kane, our Director of Marketing & Admissions, will be moving on to a new role at Bishop Blanchet High School. This is a wonderful opportunity for her family, particularly as they prepare to have three students in high school next year. I am so grateful to Kelley and all she has done to build our marketing and admissions programs. We are lucky she will still be around as a parent and will help transition whomever we hire to ensure we continue to do excellent work. Kelley has written a note of thanks to the community, please read it here
. Also, please join me in congratulating her and supporting her in this next adventure. Kelley will finish her role in two weeks and I hope to have the position posted by the end of this week. Feel free to send any qualified candidates my way!
Thank you to each of you for a great start. I hope everyone has time for rest, relaxation, and a wonderful end of the week and weekend.
Construction is in full swing and we are approaching $5.5 million in fundraising.
