December 4, 2019
Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,
This week marks the first week of Advent, the season of waiting for the birth of Jesus. The word Advent literally means “coming” and that is a word we hear often this time of year. Relatives are coming. Holiday parties are coming. Gift exchanges are coming. End of trimester grades are coming. Stress is coming. It is easy to get caught up in the negative connotations of all of life’s circumstances that come at us during this time of year. What a perfect time to remember that during this first week of Advent, we light a candle for hope. Hope is knowing that what is coming is going to bring light, joy, and love into our lives. Hope is what our faith brings to us each and every day.
This past summer, our staff read the book Onward by Elena Aguilar, which is about cultivating resilience. Each month has a particular theme and December’s theme is “Look for the Bright Spots.” What a perfect theme in the midst of Advent. As we navigate a time that is busy, stressful, and literally dark outside, we have to work hard to find and celebrate the bright spots. During Advent, we create literal bright spots by lighting the Advent wreath, reminding us that Jesus is the light in our lives. We also spend time in prayer, giving, laughter, and celebration, creating multiple bright spots along the way. I hope everyone is able to find multiple bright spots in these next three weeks and use those to continue to make ASB a place where everyone feels welcomed and supported in this Advent season!
