Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,
 
Welcome back!  While the snow is lovely and provides all kinds of fun, it is wonderful to be back at school.  We missed the kiddos – and the structure of our normal routines. I am sure many of you did as well.  A huge thank you to our Facilities Director, Mr. Quick, for working hard through the snow to keep our sidewalks and facilities safe.  An extra thank you to Mr. Dougherty and Mr. Pouley for getting here early this morning to shovel snow.  Definitely the most glamorous part of administration!
 
We say a special prayer for our 8th graders this week as they eagerly anticipate high school acceptance letters arriving.  We are so proud of our 8th graders – their leadership, hard work, kindness, and Bulldog spirit!  We know they will carry that on as they work to finish this year strong and take their gifts on to many different high schools next year.
 
One tradition that we have at ASB is that our 8th grade class presents a gift to the school at the end of the year.  The gift symbolizes their gratitude for their time at ASB and is a way for us to remember them.  The 8th graders fundraise to support this gift.  This year, our 8th graders will be hosting TWO parents’ nights out!  Students in grades PK-4 are invited to join their favorite 8th graders in the ASB gym on Sunday March 3rd, 5:00-8:00, and Friday March 22nd, 6:00-9:00, while their parents enjoy an evening out.  Attend either or both! Pizza, crafts, and games included.  Registration information will be coming soon. Thank you to our 8th grade class for providing this.
 
Despite the snow and interruptions, everyone has been hard at work.  School Commission approved a draft budget for next year that will be presented to Governance Council next week.  By mid-March, the budget will be finalized and we will be gearing up for our State of the School meetings and registration for next year.  Please mark your calendars now as attendance at one of the State of the School meetings is mandatory.  March 27th 6:30 PM, March 28th 7:45 AM or March 28th 12:00 PM.
 
Our staff has been hard at work as well.  We are working on calendar for next year, finishing curriculum maps, planning for spring, and more.  We’ve been continuing our work with Beth Peterson to develop executive function coaching skills, have three staff members heading off to the Learning & the Brain conference in San Francisco, four staff members working through their second year of Slingerland training, and attending a variety of conferences in between.  Thank you to our staff – your dedication to being life-long learners and always working to do what is best for students is unparalleled.
 
Finally, the snow did not only cause several schools to have to cancel, it led to the cancellation of the Fulcrum Foundation’s annual Celebration of Light last Friday evening.  The Celebration of Light is a night that not only celebrates the many accomplishments of our Catholic schools, but is also an important fundraiser.  Founded in 2002, the Fulcrum Foundation leverages the resources of the entire community in innovative and strategic ways to sustain and strengthen Catholic schools in western Washington.  The Foundation’s three core programs are tuition assistance, school partnerships, and leadership development.  Our school has benefited from each of these programs.  The Celebration of Light generally raises over $800,000 the night of the event and it is important that number be met despite the cancellation.  To learn more about Fulcrum’s programs, here is a link to their website.  I highly encourage you to check it out.

Basketball News:
As most people know, due to the snow storms of this past weekend, all CYO Championship games were cancelled.  I want to reiterate to all of our teams, how sorry I am that our seasons came to a close in this fashion.  I also want to congratulate the four teams that finished the CYO season as co-champions in their division in CYO.

Volleyball News:
Volleyball registration is now closed and we are now in the process of finalizing coaches and arranging teams. If you are interested in coaching, please do not hesitate to contact Emilie O'Connor (Volleyball Coordinator) or Dylan Pouley.

In 7th and 8th grade girls volleyball, the teams are split into varsity and junior varsity divisions. This requires an assessment process that allows assessors to determine the best fit for each player.  Assessments will be held on Wednesday, February 13.  Please note that due to the weather this week, we have reduced volleyball assessments to ONE NIGHT.

The assessors will be looking at the skills of each student and will focus on serving, passing, setting & spiking and court play.  Overall, it's pretty low key and we strive to create an environment that is low stress and lots of fun. Parents are not allowed in the gym to watch the assessments.

The following are the times for the CYO volleyball coaches meetings and Play Like a Champion Today training.  CYO requires at least one coach from every team attend a coaches meeting.  I will update individual coaches on their needs for PLACT training.

Baseball News: 
 

ASB CYO Baseball Registration closes Friday, February 15.


Registration for baseball is open to all boys grades 5th through 8th and will run from Wednesday, January 30, through Wednesday, February 13 at 11:59 pm.  Late registration will begin at midnight on February 14 and run through February 15, at 11:59 pm.  No registration will be accepted after February 15. ASB School has enough equipment and uniforms to field three CYO  baseball teams.  This means that one or more of the teams will be a split team of multiple grade levels.

Camp ASB 2019 Registration is now OPEN!

Camp ASB registration forms are now available.  We are still working on the summer calendar, and that information will not be available until around the start of April. However, registration forms and camp dates are now official and we are ready to start accepting registration forms.

This summer, Camp ASB will return to its traditional schedule.  We will be open for 7 weeks in June and July, with the month of August closed for maintenance and faculty in-service work.  We are anticipating construction activities over the course of the summer, and the same cautiousness in which we entered last summer will also guide our plans for this summer.  As we plan for this coming summer, we are always looking to add more activities and new experiences to our schedule, as well as trying to shape our program to best meet the needs of all of our families.  In this regard, we are planning on revising our Camp ASB policies on the use of personal electronics.  We still want to allow students to have freedom and choice in their summer experience, but we also want to respect those families that limit screen time or have specific rules about screen time.  We will have more information on our new plan, when everything is finalized.

I am also happy to announce that Camp ASB will again be partnering with Hoopaholics Basketball to offer a Camp ASB Basketball Camp the week of July 22-26. 2019.  
 

 

The full Camp ASB calendar and KinderCamp information for 2019 will be available by the beginning of April.

  • Camp ASB Registration forms are now available.  Please go to the Extended Care page on the ASB Website, to get more information.

  • There will be NO SCHOOL and NO EXTENDED CARE February 15-19.  Extended Care will reopen on Wednesday, February 20 at 7:00 am.

School Store has great new items! 
Stop by the store Wednesday morning, Thursday afternoon, or order your bulldog gear by sending in a check with the order form in your Wednesday Envelope. Store parents will fill the order and send it back home with your student as soon as possible. Go to HERE for more information.

Assumption Parish:
Are you looking for a way to fulfill service hours? Come join us on Tuesday, February 12th Assumption Parish will be hosting a sew for Days for Girls - an international organization that makes menstrual kits for girls around the world so that they can stay in school. Our local Days for Girls is part of the Limbe Seattle Sister City Association and is comprised of our neighbors at Beth Shalom on 35th, First African American Methodist Church on First Hill, and Baitul Ehsaan a Muslim community in Bothell. Snacks and refreshments will be served. You do not need to sew there are many tasks for non-sewers. Bring your sewing machine, iron/board, or just your self and come work with us - we would love to have you. 6:30 - 9 pm in the Fellowship Hall - come when you can - no need to stay the entire time.Please contact Ellen Bollard -  or 206-940-1069 if you have any questions or would like to help with food, set-up or clean-up.Thank you.
St. Bridget Parish:

Children’s Faith Formation, Family Nights, and Sacramental Preparation
On Monday evenings from 7-8pm we offer a program for children in grades 1-5 that involves fun, faith formation, and fellowship.  Younger students will have the opportunity to get paired up with older student "buddies" in the Junior High EDGE program, meets at the same time.

Northeast Seattle Little League Registration is now open for the 2019 Season
