SOE ranked #8 Best Online Grad Program by U.S. News
A School of Education student works at her laptop in Oliver Hall.The VCU School of Education was recently ranked #8 in Best Online Graduate Education Programs by U.S. News & World Report. With 309 schools of education participating nationwide, only two Virginia schools of education ranked among this year’s top 50, with SOE being one of them.

SOE's newest center officially open
Headshot of Dr. LaRon ScottThe VCU School of Education’s newest center had its official opening and ribbon cutting ceremony near the end of last semester in Oliver Hall. The Minority Educator Recruitment, Retention & Equity Center is a grant-funded center housed in room 4064B of Oliver Hall. It will serve as a safe hub for underrepresented minority (URM) educators across programs, as well as support URM educators in our local school divisions.

Exposing unfair treatment of black girls in schools
Dr. Danielle Apugo, visiting iCubed scholarBlack girls routinely face disproportionate amounts of discipline in their classrooms over subjective issues like their hair, their bodies, or their attitudes – and the policies in place in schools are not set up to address this issue. This is according to research conducted by Dr. Danielle Apugo, visiting iCubed scholar who is researching methods toward disrupting criminalization in education.

Student spotlight
Stevara Clark: Connection, sisterhood and mentorship
Stevara Clark, doctoral student in the VCU School of EducationStevara Clark was born in Dale City, Virginia. She’s an assistant professor in teaching with the VCU School of Social Work and program coordinator of that school’s Online Master of Social Work program. Clark earned her bachelor’s and master's degrees in social work from VCU, and she’s pursuing her Ed.D. in Leadership in the Higher Education Administration learning community at the VCU School of Education.

Cheryl Lewis Burke: Born to teach. Destined to lead.
Stevara Clark, doctoral student in the VCU School of EducationCheryl Burke is a fourth-generation educator who believes that “teachers are born, not made.” She earned her Master’s of Education in Educational Leadership with a Concentration in Administration and Supervision from the VCU School of Education in 1981. Promoted to principal of Chimborazo Elementary School in 1996, she retired in 2014 after 38 years of service to Richmond Public Schools. Today, she is the 7th District representative on the Richmond School Board.
