Gilbert and Sullivan’s first great hit!

From University of Toronto Opera Division's H.M.S. Pinafore  Ryan Downey as Captain Corcoran

The world is still humming tunes from this mega musical and they caused a riot when Captain Corcoran was caught cursing in public!
Messrs. Gilbert and Sullivan were masters at bursting pomposity and exposing social silliness.  Just think of the fun they could have with the goings on we read about every day in the papers, on TV and our tablets.  The ‘tablet’ there’s a subject ripe for a comic monologue.  No escape, even at the airport cafe!
Don’t miss ‘When I was a lad’, ‘Never mind the why and wherefore’, ‘For he is an Englishman’, ‘I’m called little Buttercup’,I am the Captain of the Pinafore’ and many more!

Meet the Cast of H.M.S. Pinafore!
What is Josephine, daughter of Captain Corcoran, to do?  Should she marry for money or love?  Charlotte Knight has a dilemma onstage.  Offstage, our soprano from Toronto is devoted to expanding her professional horizons.  She was a delightful, if slightly ditzy Cecily in TOT’s EARNEST, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING and will be seen in Villa Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 with The Gallery Players of Niagara and the roles of Nymph and Spring in The Fairy Queen with Toronto Masque Theatre.
Some might say that Rosalind McArthur – our Buttercup - was born knowing all the lyrics of the G & S least she learned them at a young age growing up.  Now Roz lives with her thriving family just north of Toronto and when not in TOT’s shows, she is a stage director for THE MELVILLE BOYS (Oshawa Little Theatre; Sept 2015) and CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (Onstage Uxbridge; January 2016).
Irishmen are blessed – or is it cursed? – with the gift of blarney and Gregory Finney will need all that and more too as he dazzles us with the intricacies of Sir Joseph Porter’s many patter songs. From Cape Breton, Greg has charmed TOT audiences in FLEDERMAUS, MERRY WIDOW, TAPTOO! and COUSIN FROM NOWHERE.
New to TOT is Ryan Downey, debuting as Captain Corcoran.  Ryan is a graduate of the U of T’s Opera Divison and appeared there in productions of POSTCARD FROM MOROCCO, ALBERT HERRING and...H.M.S. PINAFORE! He has also been heard as Basilio in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO and Arbace in IDOMENEO.
Christopher Wattam, making his TOT debut as ‘able seaman’ Ralph Rackstraw on the PINAFORE, was recently heard in Weill’s SEVEN DEADLY SINS presented by The Friends of Gravity in Toronto.  A graduate of the University of Guelph, credits include Tamino in THE MAGIC FLUTE for  Summer Opera Lyric Theatre, Orpheus Choir and Opera Nuova in Edmonton.
Another debutante is Natasha Fransblow who will lead the production as music director and pianist.  She hold a Master of Music from the University of Manitoba, and a Bachelor of Music from Dalhousie University. As an emerging artist at Opera Nuova, Natasha was the repetiteur for DON GIOVANNI, CENDRILLON, and Canadian opera THE LIVES OF LESSER THINGS.
