This is it: the last day of the year! And, as we reflect on this moment, we’re at once grateful and full of expectations and hope for the new year.
We are grateful for the support we received throughout the year, without which we couldn’t have survived the combination of a pandemic and an increasingly restrictive regulatory environment for family-based immigration. We are grateful for becoming nimbler, quicker, more virtual, less constrained by a physical office - which most of the year remained closed to the public - more focused on the well being of our clients.
We are full of expectations for the road ahead, and for your continued support.
It is this continued support that will further enable us to serve the North Texas immigrant population, starting with the young people that are now able to apply for their initial DACA. We have received many inquiries by youngsters and mothers asking for assistance, and we’re well on our way to helping as many of them as we can. In fact, our transformation into a more virtual organization and a steady outpour of volunteer support, especially from North Texas college students, has enabled us to significantly increase our capacity!
The other kind of support, monetary contributions, enable us to remain a very affordable option (“Low Bono”) for immigration legal services in the region, and even offer “Pro Bono” services to those clients with serious financial difficulties, like a recent DACA Renewal applicant: a nurse at a community clinic - an "essential worker” - who tested positive for COVID19 and had to go on unpaid leave for a couple of weeks. This makes it really hard to afford an onerous “Immigration Tax”: $495 every two years, plus our modest legal fees. At least she didn’t have to worry about the latter, and we were able to do this in part by your generous financial contributions!
So on this last day of the year, please consider making a donation to Opening Doors. Every penny counts, and it all adds up to amplify our reach and beneficial impact on the Denton and North Texas immigrant community. Thank you!
