Covid-19 Update

It is disappointing that East Sussex is in Tier 2 when we have very low rates. After the announcement, I raised the lack of Government consultation with our local NHS and County leads when making this decision.

You can watch here.

East Sussex MPs response to Tier 2

Caroline, Maria, Nus, Sally-Anne and I have worked with local NHS and County leaders to press for local data to be taken into account by central decision makers. Our response to the decision, and process, is here.

International Travel
Having spoken again for Covid testing to reduce the 14 day quarantine period, and give a boost to our beleaguered aviation sector, I was pleased to welcome a Government announcement which could cut the length by 9 days. Listen to the speech here and read the Govt announcement here.

Leaseholders and Cladding

Leaseholders should not be held responsible for replacing flammable cladding.

Using an example from Bexhill, watch my question to the Minister here.

Observer Article

Care Home visits, support for small businesses, aviation debates, meetings with No10 on planning changes, virtual vs physical all about the week in Westminster here.

Buy Local Campaign

Following on from my local Chambers of Commerce and Team East Sussex, I have been supporting the Buy Local campaign to help our high streets. Hopefully, you will see some of these posters popping up on social media and shop fronts encouraging residents to buy from local retailers this Christmas. They have had a really tough time and need all the help they can get.

Open: Christmas Tree Farms

Following a call for help from local Christmas Tree Farms who had been told they could not open as normal until 2 December, I took their case to No10 and other departments to overturn this ruling. Emergency legislation was passed overnight to enable opening to the public. A great Christmas tradition restored in a challenging year.

East Sussex Needs You!

If you are a Sussex resident, the NHS is on the hunt for new vaccinators and volunteers to help protect millions of people from COVID-19.

Anyone wanting to volunteer to join COVID Vaccine Team can do so via this link.

Covid-19 Winter Plan - Prime Minister and Care Home Visits

I welcomed the Prime Minister's commitment to allow more family and friends to visit loved ones in care settings; it is vital that Government guidance makes a presumption in favour of visiting and that settings permit it.

Watch my question here.

Spending Review

This week's Spending Review continued the Government's commitment to national transport investment. Wearing my Select Committee hat, I welcomed the commitment and asked Rishi to keep an eye on delivery and value for money.

Watch here.

Meeting with Local Headteachers

East Sussex MPs were contacted by Headteachers across the county with concerns around Covid challenges and related cost pressures. We invited the heads to a virtual meeting and proposed to take their concerns to Ministers at the Department for Education for answers.

LGV Driver Shortages

This week, the Select Committee started our evidence sessions with the CEOs of the Government agencies responsible for transport delivery and services. First up, the DVSA. With thanks to our local constituent, and owner of LGV driving training agency, Gary Curtis, I asked what the agency is doing to ensure that those looking to train as lorry, mini-bus and emergency service drivers are getting tested when ready and then able to meet a driver shortage. Watch the exchange here. Next up; the CEO Highways England.

East Sussex Visitor Summit

Thanks to our local chambers, businesses and our cultural and heritage organisations for hosting a brilliant conference. Our Keynote speaker, the Tourism Minister, spoke to us all and welcomed our plans to make East Sussex the place to visit and stay.
