Support for teachers through the proposed parent pledge

I recently attended a roundtable at Heathfield Community College attended by local Heads and Governors. Many excellent ideas were discussed and I pushed one in Education Questions in the House of Commons, that I feel would have a positive impact in supporting teachers from the pressures they face.
Watch my question in the Commons here.

Patrol PACER Awards

I recently attended the annual PACER awards. I attend and sponsor these awards every year and enjoy meeting different Local Authorities from across the country. and seeing how passionate they are about improving civil enforcement in their respective areas.

Work Experience Students

Towards the end of the recent Parliamentary session, I have had a number of Work Experience Students join my team in both Westminster and the Constituency. This is an opportunity for the students to get an understanding of what it is like working for an MP and to experience what it is like to work in a fast-paced office environment.
You can read Henry’s account of his week here and Lily’s account of her week here.

Clergy visit to Parliament

I was pleased to welcome Fr Robert Coates and members of St Augustine's team to Parliament for a tour. I was also lucky enough to be able to join them for lunch.
If you would like more information on how to book a Democratic Access Tour, then please get in touch with my office at

DEFRA Meeting

Sally-Ann Hart MP and I organised a roundtable for local farmers and officials from the Rural Payments Agency and Defra about the new government farming schemes which are available to them.  I am planning to organise a further roundtable for farmers on the western side of the constituency on Friday 14 October. Local farmers are welcome to email or phone my office to register their interest in attending. Read the full press release here.

St Augustine's house for Ukrainian guests

I was delighted to be invited by Fr Robert Coates to join the blessing of a property belonging to the St Augustine's Housing Trust in Bexhill which has been offered as a home for Ukrainian guests.  It was a wonderful community event where I was very pleased to meet some of our Ukrainian guests and hosts.

South East Water

I was disappointed with South East Water's response to water mains bursts impacting the villages of Hurst Green, Robertsbridge, Mountfield and Etchingham in the constituency. Whilst SE Water engineers have been on-site to fix the leaks, the only bottled water station was set up in Flimwell, some miles away from impacted residents.  SE Water say this was for logistical reasons as the water supplies come in on articulated lorries.  This is not good enough and arrangements should have been made to transport bottled water stations to every impacted village. I have since spoken to the Chief Executive of South East Water for answers and a better service.

Transport Select Committee Integrated Rail Plan (IRP) Report

This week the Transport Select Committee published our report "The Integrated Rail Plan for the North and Midlands" urging the government to carry out a thorough reassessment of the IRP to ensure this once-in-a-generation investment in rail is not a missed opportunity to address regional imbalance. Our inquiry found that alternative options, which could transform stations and city centres in key Northern cities have not been properly tested. I’m delighted that, the day after report, some of the recommendations have been accepted by Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak. Sara Lee Trust new Therapy Centre

I visited the site for the new Sara Lee Trust’s Therapy Centre in Sidley a few weeks ago, the new Hallspace is due to open in March 2023. I was lucky enough to be able to lay the first brick for the new bespoke hall, a space which will allow The Trust to expand group support and activities so they can help more local people affected by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. I’m really pleased that the Sara Lee Trust has embarked on this project to expand their facilities and services in the centre of Sidley where they are accessible to all.

Tower Ditch Pevensey

Last autumn, I visited Pevensey Bay to meet a local resident who was concerned about the stagnant water in Tower Ditch at Marine Avenue.  The smell from the ditch, especially in summer, is horrible for local residents.
Since then, I have been working with Southern Water and the Pevensey and Cuckmere Water Management Board to find a solution to clear the ditch. Whilst the ditch is not the responsibility of Southern Water, they have committed to helping the clearance of the ditch and improve water flows with their resources as a project to help the local community.  Some early works will be carried out this month but the full clearance project will take place over winter to protect the eels and other wildlife in the ditch.   I was joined for the visit by our work experience student, Henry Lowe.
