HUW MERRIMAN MP NEWSLETTER
11th September 2020

Covid-19 update:

The number of people legally allowed to meet has been reduced to six (with a few exceptions). I have concerns about this step and a failure to exclude those under the age of 12 years (as in Scotland and Wales) from the bubble of six. This has not been debated in, or voted by, Parliament. For the latest shielding and distancing guidance visit here.

Schools Reopen

Today, I’m visiting a local school to see how they are faring with the new term. In my Observer column, I reflected on the recent issues afflicting our education system and why it was so essential that our schools reopen.

Hospital Improvements

Another £6m has been provided to East Sussex Healthcare Trusts to bring forward plans for a major rebuild of our three hospitals. I will keep up the pressure to secure the big investment decision.
Protecting Shopworkers

One of my campaigns is to see tougher sanctions against the mindless thuggery and lawlessness which our shop and service workforce have to endure. We need tougher sentences and I’ve added my name to call for more action.

Aviation Debate

I secured, and opened, a debate in Parliament this week on our Aviation sector. It was good to have a former Prime Minister, Transport Secretary and Aviation Minister speak up for this £28 billion pound industry which employs 230,000 people; many locally.

Coronavirus Testing

With the testing centre at the Brighton Amex stadium being closed for the resumption of football, we will need a new testing site in the area to ensure sufficient availability. The online test booking system needs to direct people locally and not miles away. I’ve written to the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, for a solution.
Eat Out To Help Out

Well done Bexhill and Battle constituency, a staggering 144,000 meals enjoyed during the Eat Out To Help Out Scheme in August! A real boost for our great local restaurants, cafes and pubs who got took part in the scheme.
Constituency Cycling Tour

I am continuing my cycling tour around the constituency visiting local businesses.
If your business will be open along my route, let me know either by email or on my social media, and I will stop to say hello and promote your business.

Coronavirus cases in our area

This tracker on the government website provides information on covid-19 cases. The BBC also provides up to date information on a weekly basis which you can access here. If you have symptoms of COVID-19 you need to get tested.
Face Coverings in Secondary Schools

Having argued that schools are a safe setting which do not need these restrictions, I was pleased to hear the Education Secretary largely agree.

Watch our exchange in the chamber here.
Internal Market Bill

Whilst supporting the bulk of this bill, there is a section which would appear to put the UK in breach of our international treaty obligations. More fine-tuning is therefore needed.

Civil Parking Enforcement comes to Rother

Since I was first elected, I have campaigned for better parking controls in our towns and villages. The legislation granting the change of control from police to traffic wardens will be passed this month. Read the Minister’s confirmation here.

Transport Select Committee on Young and Novice Drivers

My committee is looking at whether additional curbs are needed to improve safety. It’s a balance between liberty and safety. We took evidence from those who want more restrictions.

Listen to the arguments here.

New Jobs for Young People

The Government’s new Kickstart scheme will cover the wages of a new young recruit for the first 6 months. I hope employers across the constituency will come together to use the scheme and give young people a chance to get their foot on the ladder.
The Sussex Chamber of Commerce can help guide you through the process at their website link here

Testing after Travel

It would make sense to allow inbound passengers to obtain Covid testing in order to exit the 14 day quarantine period. The Government appear willing but I pushed the Transport Secretary for a timetable.

Debate on School Exams

My contribution to the debate on awarding of qualifications this summer - exams should be held at the beginning of summer, content should reflect the amount of time spent in the classroom, and schools are safe.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology provides support to both teachers and students, helping to develop valuable skills.
One exciting STEM programme is the FIRST® LEGO® League Discover programme, which is aimed at four to six year olds, to learn about a real-world topic and apply their developing STEM skills to solve a problem. Children work in small groups and develop key habits of learning.
