Covid-19 Update

After the Prime Minister's statement to the House introducing the second national lockdown, I sought evidence from him as to why giving up the regional approach for national lock down is justified when we have such low local infection rates and hospitalisation in East Sussex.

Covid-19 Regulations Debate

I asked the Prime Minister for the second time whether there was any evidence that a second lockdown would be more beneficial than harmful.
After not receiving any evidence, I then spoke on why I could not support the Government and voted against the November restrictions.

Support for Small Businesses

Small and medium businesses are the heart of our local communities and there are lots of ways to support your local high street during lockdown. I spoke in Parliament in support of our 'buy local' campaign. You can watch here. Read more about what you can do here.
Remembrance Sunday 

Thank you to everyone across the Bexhill and Battle constituency who organised Remembrance Sunday events. Our vicars, Royal British Legion and community ensured we remembered those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This year I laid the wreath from Parliament at Heathfield.

Quiz Queen Georgie putting Frances and I through our paces in the latest round of her political and trivia quiz. Another dismal performance by me but a wonderful morning with the staff and residents.
 
Prime Minister's Questions

I called for a prompt decision from the Prime Minister to reduce the quarantine period and support the aviation industry, after this current lockdown.

Family Access to Care Homes

This week I have been campaigning to ease visiting restrictions in care homes. Having heard from local families and those running care homes, I’ve spoken for them in Parliament and on national media. The changes I am seeking to introduce are explained in my speech to Parliament here or read about the Minister's response here.
 
Decarbonising the Rail Industry

The Transport Select Committee held our first evidence session on the challenges of decarbonising the rail industry and what the Government can do to support this.

Further Financial Support

With the new lockdown the Treasury has announced a range of additional measures:

  • Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme extended for 1 month
  • More generous, quicker support for self-employed
  • Cash grants up to £3k for closed businesses
  • £1.1bn to Local Authorities for further payments to businesses
  • Mortgage payment holiday extended
  • Furlough extended until March 2021
Heritage Recovery Grant

Good news that the Windmill at Windmill Hill will receive £11,700 as part of the Heritage Recovery Grant.

Channel Migrant Crossings

I have received several enquiries from those concerned about the safety of refugees crossing the Channel and the security implications.

Bexhill Chamber of Commerce

Another great meeting with our local businesses. We discussed the latest restrictions, the support given, those who have missed out and how we need a local and national plan to support small businesses get through this. Tomorrow I am meeting Battle Chamber of Commerce members in their shops.
 
Covid Winter Grant Scheme

In a building upon the previous policy the Government have given councils £170m more funding to help families in need.
