The Workshop

THE ART OF DOCUMENTARY STORYTELLING is a three-day interactive workshop designed for television professionals. The workshop is broken into three general sections.

The first covers the key elements of development and how to move from idea to proposal.

The second part focuses on understanding the distinct structural components behind any good story and examining the editorial and technical crafts that transform that story into an engaging documentary (with special emphasis on writing and editing).

The third section explores the many techniques that can help you master the challenges of the major specialist factual genres: science, history, reality and presenter-led.

Throughout the workshop, an extensive collection of clips will be used to illustrate the creative possibilities open to you. There will also be a variety of hands-on exercises that participants will work on to reinforce learning.

Sydney's objective is to make this workshop practical and relevant to the work you do. His hope is that it will also deepen your appreciation of the artistry required to make a documentary.
