John 16:5-16

“The Holy Spirit: Agent in the Shadows”

Rev. Susie Thomas

Jesus said: But now I go away to the one who sent me. None of you ask me, ‘Where are you going?’  Yet because I have said these things to you, you are filled with sorrow.  I assure you that it is better for you that I go away. If I don’t go away, the Companion won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.  When he comes, he will show the world it was wrong about sin, righteousness, and judgment.  He will show the world it was wrong about sin because they don’t believe in me.  He will show the world it was wrong about righteousness because I’m going to the Father and you won’t see me anymore.  He will show the world it was wrong about judgment because this world’s ruler stands condemned.

“I have much more to say to you, but you can’t handle it now.  However, when the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you in all truth. He won’t speak on his own, but will say whatever he hears and will proclaim to you what is to come.  He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and proclaim it to you.  Everything that the Father has is mine. That’s why I said that the Spirit takes what is mine and will proclaim it to you.  Soon you won’t be able to see me; soon after that, you will see me.”

Who is the Holy Spirit? Jesus said that you can’t see the Spirit, but you can see its effects, just as no one can see the wind, but we all see the tree branches bending.

The Holy Spirit is the most powerful force at work in the world today - and the spirit operates sort of like a secret agent, in the shadows. Want to learn more? Join us this Sunday and next as we explore the life-giving Holy Sprit of God.
THIS SUNDAY’S COMMUNION OFFERING WILL BENEFIT UMCOR’S RELIEF EFFORTS AROUND THE WORLD
Blessing of the Pets
THIS SUNDAY at 4:00 pm
The unconditional love we give and receive from our pets can draw us more deeply into the larger circle of life with our Creator. Please bring your pets and come join us, October 7th at 4pm for a special blessing on the front lawn. Dogs and larger animals on leashes, cats in carriers, and all caged pets are welcome. Treats will be offered for our furry friends. We are also asking that you bring a treat, toy or blanket for each pet you have and we are going to give them to the Slidell Animal Shelter. This is a great community-wide service to bring family, friends, and neighbors of all ages together!

We’ve Raised Enough Money to Support a Child for a Year!
Thanks to you, the Emmanuel School in Gamasara, Tanzania will receive over $600, more than enough to send a boy or a girl to school for a year, with books, a uniform, vaccinations, and a lunch every day. The Gamasara United Methodist Church thanks you, too! The student we sponsor will receive instruction in the Christian faith, as well - the United Methodist Church is a global connection whose goal is the making of disciples for Jesus Christ all over the world.

Now about the matter of Pastor Susie’s HAIR… We will draw the lucky winner in worship THIS SUNDAY, October 7. The winner of Sunday’s drawing can choose a hair color (temporary dye!) for Pastor Susie. It’s all for a great cause - educating one of God’s precious children!

Gentleness
Read Psalm 119:73-80

Psalm Prayer:
Dearest Lord, you have gently fashioned each one of us in your loving image. May we delight in your word and meditate on your precepts every day with great joy. And may those who see us see your gentle love. Amen.

Do you want to know what is happening in the life of your church? Join us for the Church Council Meeting on Tuesday, October 9th at 7pm in the Agape Center. You do not have to be a staff member or leader of any committee to attend. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join us as we discuss the ministries and missions of our congregation and community. Hope to see you all there.
We will be blessed on Sunday, October 14th during worship to have the children of our congregation lead us in our service.  They can participate in singing praises, greeting, ushering, serving communion with the pastors, scripture reading, collection prayer, and assisting in Children’s moment.  If your child is interested in participating, please let Pastor Susie or Pastor Cindy know by October 7th. The children are asked to be at the church on October 14th at 9:00am for practice. Please contact your Pastor Susie at pastor@prumc.net

PRUMC is hosting a Blood Drive on Sunday, October 14th before and after worship. Consider donating your blood or plasma so we can reach our goal of 25 donations. Please eat a healthy meal and drink lots of water before and after your contribution. Don’t forget to bring your photo ID. Donating blood is a gift of life for someone
FIELD TRIP!!!!
The Ladies Ministry Team invites you to join them as they take a field trip to Destrehan Plantation. They will stroll through the home, the slave quarters and the gardens Saturday, October 20th. We will caravan from the church, departing at 8:45. We will join together and enjoy lunch. Please sign up on the clipboard in the Gathering Room. Irene Wenner or Marsha Felder will be happy to answer any questions, or call the church office at 985-863-7452.

Please join us at 10 AM on Sunday, October 21 as Crosby Lane leads us in worship. No admission will be charged; a love offering will be taken.
Coming in November:

Learning to pray using prayer beads.
More information to follow!
Join Pastors Cindy and Susie, Cheryl Salvador and Kandy Ward at 9:00am, on Sunday mornings, for a “Cup of Conversation”. Bring your children, grandchildren to Sunday School and stop in the Agape Center Library and have a cup of coffee and a sweet treat.
