 Exodus 32:1-4

  “Naming Our Idols”

Rev. Susie Thomas

In the Old Testament, there is a story about what happens when people fear that God is absent, and try to fill their “God-sized hole” with something made by human hands. Moses has been gone for forty days, speaking with God at the top of Mt Sinai, and the people of Israel feared he’d left them forever.

So they made themselves an “idol “ - a statue of a golden calf. Their fear and need to worship SOMETHING, anything, overtook their memory of God’s goodness.

Do you have an “idol”? We all do. We’ll explore how our idols can come between the One True God - this Sunday, at PRUMC!

When the people realized that Moses was taking forever in coming down off the mountain, they rallied around Aaron and said, “Do something. Make gods for us who will lead us. That Moses, the man who got us out of Egypt—who knows what’s happened to him?”

So Aaron told them, “Take off the gold rings from the ears of your wives and sons and daughters and bring them to me.” They all did it; they removed the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron. He took the gold from their hands and cast it in the form of a calf, shaping it with an engraving tool.

The people responded with enthusiasm: “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up from Egypt!”

Children’s Sabbath 2018
Amelia Mayfield helped lead our worship last Sunday, as our children and youth participated in every aspect of our service.
Thank you to each young disciple who read, sang, and prayed! YOU are an important part of the Body of Christ.

Read Psalm 20

Psalm Prayer:
Remembering your faithfulness from age to age, O Lord, let us trust that you have our best interests in mind as you respond to our cries for help in times of need. By your grace, teach us to rely more and more on your strong hand to support and guide us in the face of adversity. Amen.

Friends, please join us on Sunday, October 28, 2018 as we celebrate the financial commitment you have pledged to your church.  It is by your generosity that our church  is succeeding in spreading the word of God.  We are asking you to bring your favorite dish to share in a potluck lunch immediately following the dedication service.  Also please wear your  “I Love My Church” t-shirt that Sunday as we hope to take a group picture of all in attendance. Our District Superintendent may be with us in worship. We look forward to a great day and a successful pledge campaign!
Our Prayer Gazebo
and Garden Are Ready!
Thanks to the contributions of many, our Mike Cannon Prayer Garden is complete, and ready for a service of dedication.  Please join Pastor Susie and Pastor Cindy immediately following worship on Sunday, October 28th around our new Prayer Garden as we dedicate the garden to the glory of God and in memory of Mike Cannon, whose wife Linda has generously given us the funds to construct this beautiful asset to our campus.

Please put our dedication on your calendar. This addition to our campus will bless our church for many years to come.
We’re Collecting Candy…

We’re participating in Pearl River’s Trunk or Treat on October 26 from 6 to 9 PM. We’ll have a “trunk” - you supply the “treats” - and our kids and adults will represent PRUMC as we mingle, play games, and have fun!

On behalf of PRUMC, Rev. Susie receives an award from Pearl River police chief JJ Jennings, at Tuesday evening’s town council meeting.

The award was for our church’s participation in efforts to combat bullying and ensure students’ safety in our schools.

And here it is: Pastor Susie’s new ‘do! YOU helped raise enough money to sponsor TWO children for a year at the King Emmanuel School in Gamasara, Tanzania, and so as promised, Susie dyed her hair an oddball shade.
Here are Joseph and Edwin, our precious sponsored children. We’ll keep up with their progress throughout the year.
Again, thank you for your heart for mission. Pastor Susie’s hair will return to its normal shade by Thanksgiving!
Kenzie helped her grandmother, Jennifer Miller, to rescue two tiny kittens from under our new prayer gazebo! One boy and one girl, grey and orange tabbies, they need a few weeks before they can be adopted. Let the church office know if you’d like to “reserve “ a kitten!
Can you tell what our Sunday schoolers are learning about, this month? Stop by any Sunday at 9 and see our kids and their teachers in action!
