The Value of the Most Expensive

Biomedical Journals

Non-librarians often have the mistaken idea that because a publication is online it is cheaper than print, and that libraries actually save money by going fully digital. The truth is, academic libraries pay many, many more times above list price for providing the convenience of online institutional access, and the prices increase each year. We hope the following infographic will give our users a sense for how much annual subscriptions to popular medical journals and journal packages cost the TMC Library.

Visit the library blog  for a list of the cost of subscribing to the top 20 most popular medical journals and journal packages.
Proceedings of the National Academy

of Sciences Platform Migration

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) is moving to a new web hosting platform in early 2022. The migration is corresponding with a visual refresh of the site. The new website is being designed to offer a new reader-centric look and feel for PNAS readers and authors.

While users are not likely to experience any interruption in access, the entire PNAS corpus, dating back to 1915, will migrate from HighWire Press to the Atypon Literatum platform. The blogs, Journal Club and PNAS Updates, and the podcast, Science Sessions, will be migrated as well, offering a unified experience on the new website.

The URL domain name will remain: pnas.org. The Journal Club blog will be moving from https://www.pnas.org/journal-club to https://www.pnas.org. Permanent redirects will be put in place for article, issue, and informational pages to ensure access continuity.

The migration date is slated for February 28, 2022.

The McGovern Historical Center (MHC) archivists have been digitizing images from their collection in response to patron inquiries, library exhibits, and patron requests. The digitized images are part of the Texas Medical Center Photograph Collection from 1938 – 1982.

The photographs represent iconic structures of some TMC institutions including Baylor College of Medicine, M. D. Anderson Cancer Hospital, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, and the Jesse H. Jones Library Building. Accompanying these are a progression of aerial photographs showing the TMC’s growth as well as photographs of TMC leaders like Denton Cooley, John Norman, R. Lee Clark, Ernst W. Bertner, and Josie M. Roberts.

The digital content of the MHC now includes over 4,500 objects online that can be searched by Name or Subject making it easier than ever to retrieve sets of images from TMC institutions.

Visit the MHC Blog to see the digitized TMC photographs.
