Renew your membership!

It is that time of year when you need to renew your membership to British Orienteering and SMOC. All you need to do is to log into your account on the BOF website to pay online.

As an added incentive we are rewarding those SMOC members who renew before the 31st December with a little bonus gift. You can chose between a SMOC "giraffe" (a neck warmer) or a SMOC boot bag.

These items are limited so will be given out on a "first come first served" basis.

If you have already renewed your membership (well done you!) or when you do so - please email Freya to reserve your first choice gift.

SMOC O-tops

We are ready to place an order for some new O tops.

If you want to order a top then email for an order form. You can find all the details of sizes, options (pocket, long sleeve, short sleeve, etc.) on the kit webpage.

Entries are open for the JK 2019

The Jan Kjellstrom International Festival of Orienteering (The JK) is British Orienteering's biggest Festival of Orienteering. It takes place each year over Easter weekend and attracts around 4000 orienteers from both the UK and abroad. The event consists of a Sprint (Friday), Middle or Long (Saturday), Long (Sunday) and Relays (Monday). It is a fantastic event that also doubles up as a great family holiday.

Do consider entering this year as it is being held in the South Central region and several of the areas are within a reasonable driving time. For more information see the event website.

Entries are now open and as part of the entry process you have the opportunity to donate to worthwhile Orienteering causes. Junior Regional Orienteering Squads (JROS) is one of them. This is the umbrella group above the 12 regional squads of which our SMOC juniors are members of the East Anglian one.  It raises money to help fund the summer training camps for juniors as well as the yearly Hawkshead camp for promising 16 year olds. There is no money received from BOF to fund the camps so this funding helps top up the money received from athletes and coaches. Thank you.

Club Training Afternoon Report

Well done to all of you who attended the recent training afternoon at Aspley Heath. We hope you enjoyed it! We spent the afternoon practicing judging distances in different types of terrain before going on to practice following bearings in a hilly and quite challenging area. Two of our younger juniors (Isaac Hopkins and Richard Askham) did really well learning to follow bearings for the first time!

A big thank you to Steve, our club coach, for setting the exercises and for running both the club training in the afternoon and the East Anglian Junior Squad training in the morning! It was a long day but judging by the feedback everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
