As we close the book on year one at Steel City Academy there is so much to celebrate, many to express gratitude to and a lifetime's worth of lessons learned. Our theme this year has been rooted in stories and that we have the power and responsibility to redefine the story of what is possible for a high performing school in Gary. In that, we are thankful for every single one of you for being an integral part of our year one story--as relentless supporters, cheerleaders near and far, financial backers, Gear and Flame teachers and so many other roles. This story could not have been written without you. And like any great story, we are turning to year two and our chapter of growth where we will double our enrollment size, double our staff and occupy a newly renovated building. We look forward to continuing to engage you as an essential member of our team in bringing boundless opportunities to our incredible students.
Joy & Purpose
Closing out the first year of Steel City Academy was bittersweet. Our team was thrilled to watch our students learn and grow throughout the year; so you can imagine how sad we were to watch the year wind down. Steel City Students approached the final weeks of school with laser focus on academic excellence, purposefully rushing to class to prepare for final examinations. And the final weeks of school were undoubtedly joyful as students engaged in Field Day competitions, and Awards Celebrations.
Additionally Steel City Students traveled to Memphis, D.C., and New Orleans on End of Year trips. Between the three trips, students: roasted s'mores; swam; explored Black History Museums; visited universities; studied climate change; met with mentors; grubbed from international food trucks; and built homes for teachers, police officers, and fire fighters. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of our individual and corporate donors; and the adult chaperones who kept students healthy and safe!
