Steel City Academy will empower the students of Gary with the most rigorous academic skills, cultural fluency, and depth of character so they can choose from boundless opportunities and strengthen the community of Gary.

The season and value of JOY!

A year ago, the founding team was designing Steel City Academy and had to articulate what our school culture would be. What did we want students, parents, staff, and community partners to feel as a part of Steel City? We decided on five core values: purpose, team, joy, grit, and power.

Since the holidays are the season of joy, it seems like a great time for us to define it. For Steel City, joy means: We love and respect all members of our community. We demonstrate this through a sense of urgency, gratitude, and fun in all that we do.

The Steel City community started small (we all fit around my kitchen table!). There were challenging and uncertain times, but it is our love for each other and the students and families of Gary that moves us forward. Today our community grows with every champion, teaching candidate, and future student we meet. So does the love and the fun! We have a lot of work to do in 2016, and we are excited for all of it! Your support has made it possible. For that, we are grateful and look forward to keeping you updated along the way.

The Steel City team wishes you a very happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year!

- Chrissy, Executive Director

Team Steel City

Director of Culture and Community
Julianne Boulware

Julianne came to Steel City Academy as an invested citizen and founding board member. She has been deeply involved with the planning and the development of the school, serving as the founding Vice Chair of the Board, and  Director of Culture and Community. As a native of Gary, Julianne is deeply committed to ensuring families in Gary have access to excellent educational opportunities for their students. She believes that a competitive and culturally responsive education for all students is the key lever in revitalizing the City of Gary. Julianne also views her work as the continuation of her family's legacy, as she descends from a family of public school teachers and athletic coaches in Gary.

Incredibly passionate about increasing the capacity of urban teachers to arrive at transformative outcomes for students, Julianne began her career as a Special Education teacher in Washington D.C. as a Teach For America Corps Member. After three years, she returned home to Gary and became Manager of Education Leadership for Teach For America - Chicago. Julianne supported other TFA alumni in increasing their impact in the classroom. She conducted research on TFA alumni teachers in Chicago and Northwest Indiana and used the results to design programming that promotes community support, culturally responsive teaching and teacher development. Her experience of building community support in Northwest Indiana and developing excellent urban teachers make her an invaluable part of the Steel City team.

Julianne is a self-professed Urban Ed Nerd. She's actively engaged in the EduColor conversation on Twitter, and enjoys attending lectures and conferences. She's a member of First A.M.E. where she's involved in the Christian Education Committee, and moonlights as a soprano in the young adult choir. Julianne received her B.A. in Psychology from Purdue University, with the Highest Distinction and her Masters of Special Education from George Mason University.
