Paige's CO2 Adventure

I was having a moment… staring at the flashing lights of the taxying airplanes at LAX. Thinking about all that the last month has contained… Suppressing my emotions, letting my music wash over my...

I charge full speed into a metal pole the width of an oil drum. I whack my face and ram my right knee midstride. The pole is ringing loud and clear to alert everyone within a 200 yard radius that I missed a pole three feet in diameter.

This opportunity to fulfill my lifelong dream of going on an oceanographic cruise came out of nowhere and smacked me in the face. It was only fitting that this pole did the same. What a beautiful analogy to start this adventure. :’)

Welcome to my newsletter!

AHOY! I am so touched at the outpouring of love and support I have received from friends family and colleagues over the past three months as I have prepared for this trip. As I want to keep everyone informed and share the delight of this experience, I thought a newsletter would be a great way to do so. If you’re reading this, thank you!! Welcome one and all 😊 I plan on giving periodic updates (internet permitting), scientific lessons, fun stories from life at sea, and hopefully some really cool pictures! There were many requests for pictures of dolphins, tales of pirates, fun science, and food. I promise to try to deliver on all of your requests!

Can't wait to share this adventure with you all!

Here’s the timeline:
March 1 to March 15 Quarantine in Woods Hole! A couple of calls with the crew, log self administered temp checks twice a day, continue normal ol’ research and meetings at UCLA, and enjoy some bubble baths in the massive bathtub in my Airbnb. Take two COVID tests.
March 15 Boarding R/V Thomas Thompson
March 16 Depart from Woods Hole, begin GO SHIP cruise A20
March 17-April 16 Assorted science, fighting scurvy, befriending pirates
April 17 (ish) Dock in the US Virgin islands
April 18 Return to land ☹
We will follow the track of A20. More information to come on what this program is and why this "track" is important

Captians Log

Wednesday, March 3rd 2021:
Today I am in Woods Hole! Well, Mashpee technically, but it all looks pretty grey and dead and shingled around here. I am three days into my two week quarantine, loging twice daily temperature checks and enjoying some bad wifi. I’ve still got plenty of duties as a graduate student researcher and ta at UCLA to fufil in the remaining time before we depart, so I’m certainly not bored or lonely. Highlights thus far include: raiding the DVD selection in the rental office before my quarantine started, taking a bubble bath with dish soap, getting a delivery with four(!!) naval history books, and eating cool whip out of the tub.

Where is the Thomas Thompson right now?

Lets see!!

No cool pictures as of yet! Enjoy these terrible iphone pics in the meantime
XOXO, Paige Hoel
