Aesculapians Names KAN Charity of the Year for 2020-21

Aesculapians is a service honor society made up of students from the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Each member is nominated and selected based on their dedication to service within the School of Medicine and the Detroit community. Each year, we partner with a local mission-centered service organization committed to Detroit’s population, which we fondly refer to as our Charity of the Year. Through this year long partnership, Aesculapians members work side by side with the organization via volunteering and fundraising to help support the mission of the selected charity.

At the end of each academic year, Aesculapians host an annual event called Lampoon to raise money and public awareness for our Charity of the Year. Our Lampoon is an evening variety show full of satirical takes on how being a medical student changes our lives through unique experiences and serves as our largest fundraiser for the selected Charity of the Year. This year, Aesculapians is so excited to have Know Allegiance Nation (KAN) as our selected Charity of the Year for 2020-2021!

Throughout the fall of 2020, Aesculapians partnered with KAN to help develop and maintain their Firehouse Garden outdoor space... click here to read more.

The Aesculapians at @waynemedicine are extremely proud and excited to announce that thanks to the support of many members of the WSUSOM community, we managed to raise over $11,400 for our charity of the year, @knowallegiance. This includes the 637 raffle tickets that were sold; the raffle alone raised $1,274 for KAN!

If you missed Lampoon, which went virtual this year, the links are below. Lampoon shared an opportunity to learn more about the Charity of the Year, Lamp and Staff Awards, who's being inducted into Aesculapians, and quality (also ridiculous) content of the current class of Aesculapians.
For more information about Aesculapians, its members, and past Charity of the Years can be found at aesculapians.org.
Support our Partner Keep Growing Detroit in Buying The Farm

KGD has partnered with KAN to teach the babies, grow food and better Detroit! Please support them with your dollars as they embark upon purchasing their farm land. That farm land which supports over 1500 gardens in Detroit, Highland Park and Hamtramck such as KAN with transplants to grow each year.

Our humble goal in supporting KGD is $250. And the Carlson Family Foundation and anonymous individual donors are matching these dollars! So your $1 becomes $2. Please help us not only reach but exceed our goal for KGD. Their total fundraising goal for this cycle is $40k. For more information, and to donate, please click here: Our Home To Grow Together.

MCR Power of One Nominations Due Friday!

About The Power of One Dedicated Woman

Since 2015, Michigan Community Resources has partnered with activist Dotti Sharp to host The Power of One Dedicated Woman, our annual awards honoring unsung women changing Detroit neighborhoods. This year, our seventh annual awards will look different because of the global pandemic, but our goal of bringing attention to the stories of women community leaders is the same.

Nominate a woman today!

Do you know a woman who is changing Detroit neighborhoods? A woman who has stepped up in this pandemic to care for needs of the community? A woman who gives of herself for the greater good? A friend, neighbor or family member who stands out from others while never seeking attention for herself? These women deserve recognition precisely because they did not ask for it. Though not often in the limelight, they are the ones who inspire. Nominate a woman today to be honored through The Power of One Dedicated Woman. Six women will be honored for their dedication to changing Detroit neighborhoods.

Message from our Partner, Public Allies:

"Let’s be clear: Justice would be George Floyd still alive. Justice would be the end of racism. The end of anti-Blackness that permeates every aspect of American life. The end of the police brutality that has become all too commonplace and a piercing testament of white supremacy."

We at KAN agree. To continue reading the article, please click here: Public Allies Newsletter.
Stay safe good people.

Peace,

Jamii
