Last week, several clients called with hours of each other with the same problem. They were experiencing severe joint pains as Hurricane Matthew spared NY and dumped rain instead.
I looked into the remedies for conditions aggravated by cold, damp weather. I wondered - might these conditions be "ameliorated by sun"?
Guess what? Half of the remedies that are indicated for conditions that improve with sunlight show up in the list of remedies for conditions aggravated by cold and damp! Could we prevent illnesses by getting enough sunlight? I started looking into natural light as an essential part of vibrant health. The takeaway : you need to get out and let sunlight enter your eyes without eyeglasses, without sunglasses and without contacts. (But don't look directly at the sun.)
The sun is the source of life on our planet. We have evolved over millenia, adapting to sun and shade, light and darkness. We have lived and worked in artificial lighting conditions for less than 150 years. What effects does this have on human functioning?
John Ott, the inventor of time-lapse photography, studied the effect of light on living cells. He concluded that full spectrum light with trace UV is necessary for healthy functioning and when we are deprived of the full spectrum of light, disease eventually results. He coined the term "mal-illumination" for the effects of being deprived of the full spectrum of light.
In human beings, light enters our eyes and goes deep into our brain, where it interacts with the hypothalamus and pineal gland ("third eye") to orchestrate the dance of life, from the level to the cell to the endocrine system to our entire immune system.
