Advocacy Day 2019: Bus Trip to Albany

Lauren Moore, Executive Director

On Wednesday, February 27, 2019, library supporters from across the state will be gathering in Albany to tell our legislators that libraries are a crucial part of New York’s education system. Communities rely on people like you—library staff, trustees, volunteers, Friends, and users—to help our legislators understand that libraries are a funding priority. Come with us to Albany to share your stories about how the library impacts the lives of its community members and why your library needs stable funding. Your stories are powerful. Your presence in Albany is important.

How to get to Advocacy Day:

You can drive, carpool, or ride the Advocacy Day Bus! The bus trip costs $12 per person and you have the option of three pick-up locations. There is also an option to purchase a boxed lunch provided by Simply Crepes.

Visit https://pls-net.org/AdvocacyDay2019 for more information and registration.

Deadline to register is February 15, 2019.

2019 Library Advocacy Agenda

This year, New York’s library community has agreed on an ambitious legislative agenda. The library community will be advocating for:

  • $200M in state funding for library aid statewide
  • $75M for the library construction aid program
  • $40M for library census activities
  • A school librarian in every school
  • An end to non-disclosure requirements in library database contracts
  • A 10% reduced match requirement for the library construction aid program.
The Governor’s Executive budget cuts state library aid by 5% and cuts the library construction aid program by 55%. Advocacy Day is Wednesday, February 27th. I hope you can all join us to advocate for the funding we need to serve our communities!

Thank You to the Following Friends Groups

Pioneer would like to thank the following member libraries Friends' groups for their generous donations to Advocacy Day 2019.

  • Avon
  • Bloomfield
  • Macedon
  • Palmyra
  • Red Jacket
  • Victor
  • Wadsworth
  • Walworth-Seely
  • Warsaw
  • Wood
  • Newark
  • Livonia
  • Wolcott

As you know, these contributions help offset the cost of the bus charter. Last year we had 12 donations from Friends’ groups for a total of $665.00.  However, the actual cost of the bus trip is $1575.00.  With the generous support of the Library Friends, we can offer affordable travel to committed advocates. Any amount is welcome – as are any and all passengers!

Please consider sending a contribution to Pioneer Library System if you haven't yet. Thank you so much and hope to see you on February 27, 2019, in Albany advocating for our libraries!
