CHINESE NEW YEAR 2017 SPECIAL EDITION

Butterfly Ladies Band -- Chinese New Year Concert 2017

In the lead up to the Chinese New Year 2017, China’s Butterfly Ladies Band will take the audience on an epic journey through the sights and traditional sounds of China.  

Featuring members of the award-winning Zhejiang Traditional Orchestra, 15 talented female musicians will present traditional Chinese music, using a range of eastern instruments including sheng, banhu, liuqin, daruan and erhu. Their performing style highlights characteristic Jiangnan flavour, and is highly diverse and dynamic with strong visual impacts. 

With Chinese traditional string and woodwind instruments expertly played by selected performers of the Zhejiang Traditional Orchestra, this performance will transport audiences to a place of beauty and wonder through delightful melodies and enchanting visuals.

The well-acclaimed Butterfly Ladies Band will perform in Sydney, followed by its Adelaide premiere. Since their last Australian performance in 2007, they have received international acclaim by audiences across the UK, Ireland, Russia, Canada, Chile and Peru.

Treasures of a Nation -- Chinese New Year Concert 2017

The prestigious Chinese Orchestra of China National Opera & Dance Drama Theatre (CNODDT)  will make their return to Australia in February 2017 for the very special musical event Treasures of a Nation – Chinese New Year Concert 2017.

The Orchestra is composed of over 50 musicians led by conductor Hong Xia and principal Gaohu soloist Bo Miao.

The Treasures of a Nation promises to be a transcendent experience with the Orchestra performing music that merges traditional Chinese style with contemporary music. The concert will take you on a fascinating musical journey, exploring the treasures and rich culture of a nation.

Chinese Garden Chamber Music 2017

Experience sublime music in the seclusion and harmony of the Chinese Garden during the Chinese traditional Lantern Festival. Master instrumentalists from China collaborate with local musicians to deliver an intoxicating evening of chamber music concert, set on a floating stage in the middle of the scenic pond. 

Arranged by eminent Australian composer John Huie,  and featuring the Beauty & Melody Orchestra from Sichuan, China; MSO principal cellist, David Berlin; Deputy Concertmaster of the Opera Australia, violinist, Vivien Jeffery; flute player, Jane Rutter,  and double bass player, Hugh Fraser, the concerts will exhibit a seamless fusion of  ancient Chinese traditions and modern appeal through the integration of both Eastern and Western music elements. 

The concerts will incorporate “New Folk Musical Ideas” as well as the chamber music skills of the Australian virtuosos.

Beauty & Melody Orchestra of Sichuan -- New Year Concert at Nan Tien Temple 

A special performance will be presented by the acclaimed Chinese orchestra -- Beauty & Melody at Nan Tien Temple, offering audiences an entrancing experience of Chinese traditional music in the lead up to the Chinese New Year.  

Featuring six prominent Chinese female musicians, and a number of specially designed Buddhist - themed pieces, this concert , incorporating Chinese traditional instruments such as pipa, guzheng, flute and erhu, will bring a relaxing and unique afternoon.

Happy Chinese New Year Picture Exhibition

Chinese New Year celebrations are emblematic of the cultural tradition, heritage and aesthetic aspirations of the Chinese nation, abounding in distinctive Chinese symbols of great emotional appeal. The tradition of such celebrations in China dates back more than four thousand years and includes displaying Chinese New Year couplets, playing fireworks, preparing dumplings and having the family reunion dinner on the New Year's Eve. 

This exhibition presents such joyful and lively scenes of Chinese New Year celebrations around the world, exhibiting people's anticipation and excitement towards this globally popular festival.

Chinese New Year Workshops & Performances

Organised by China Cultural Centre (Sydney) and collaborated with City of Sydney, Chippendale Creative Precinct as well as Sydney local schools, these cultural workshops and performances will feature 10 Chinese folk artists, teaching intangible cultural heritage items such as Jiajiang New Year Picture, Sugar Painting, Shadow Puppetry, Yibin Dough Modeling as well as Zigong Lantern Making, and performing Chuanbei Puppetry and Face Changing originated from Sichuan, China. Come and experience the rich culture and vivacity of Chinese New Year through these exciting and vibrant cultural activities.

Due to marriage phobia, four couples have a number of clashes with each other a week before their weddings, including emotional entanglements with previous lovers and family conflicts caused in preparing their flash marriage. The ironic style is adopted to describe the four couples' anxiety and desire for love.
