John Stein
Available June 17
“Stein has the touch.” - Layla Macoran – Jazz Inside New York
He’s in an elite class, a mere handful of jazz guitarists who consistently put taste above chops and flash.” - Wayne Everett Goins -- Professor of Music, Jazz Director at Kansas State University

With the release of Lifeline, John Stein celebrates a musical career as one of the most diverse jazz guitarists of his generation. Selected highlights from Stein’s varied discography capture his eclectic spirit with his honey-toned guitar effortlessly guiding listeners across several decades of brilliance. After retiring from a longtime career at Berklee College of Music where he held a professorship since 1999, and upon recently contracting a rare autoimmune disease, the esteemed jazz veteran decided to synthesize his remarkable body of recorded work.
The recorded output surveyed on this compilation spans more than twenty years, from Stein’s 1999’s Green Street to the most recent recording, 2021’s Serendipity. Throughout this assortment of releases, Stein has been consistently regaled for his expansiveness, turning heads with his emotive, subtle, grooving, and precise stylistic excursions.
With dazzling guitar playing, notable contributions from the side musicians, creative arrangements, and compositions that are at once sophisticated and memorable, the full scope of John Stein’s instrumental and compositional prowess is on display on this prodigious, varied, and musically rewarding retrospective.

#20 (4 weeks on chart)

"Hello Ricky, I’m a friend of Doug Sides who lives along the coast in Broadstairs. We met in Paris at the Wayne Dockery Tribute four years ago where Martin Goodsmith and I were filming a short piece on ‘Jazz Americans in Paris’. We didn’t get the chance to interview you, but there’s a short clip of you playing at 7:17 here

And to those of you at Whaling City Sound, what a fine label! All the best," Adam Sieff, Jazz on the Beach, Deal Radio, UK
"If you ever wondered what happened to Ricky Ford, 'great player,' wonder no longer. And if you have been tuned in all along, lucky you. You should have been telling the rest of us to pay attention. Better late than never." - Richard Salvucci (All About Jazz)

"Ford delivers a masterclass in tenor saxophone playing, drawing on the traditionalists with a reverence for bop and vitality for ballads that few can match." - Jim Hynes (Glide Magazine)

Jim Robitaille releases

"Boston-based guitarist Jim Robitaille led a band drawn from the Monk Institute students in an impressive performance of his award winning "Arthur C," a composition dedicated to Arthur C. Clarke. As winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Composers Competition, Robitaille received a $10.000 grant. like a cross between "Naima" and a Joe Henderson tune, Robitaille's tune indeed sounded like something jazz players would opt to play, as opposed to some of the more idiosyncratic winners in years past." - (JazzTimes)

"With catchy melodies, sophisticated arrangements, and a guitarist with the skills to bring it all together, the Jim Robitaille Group's debut To Music is familiar but also has its own identity." - (Jazz Improv Magazine)

"What Robitaille has done with To Music is release a remarkable album of modern post-bop. Robitaille is obviously his own man. Pianist Matt Richard is a strong soloist and even better accompanist, with shades of Richie Beirach. Bassist Dave Zinno and drummer Chris Poudrier anchor things and generate a sense of intensity without overplaying. A front runner for debut of the year." - (jazzviews, UK)

"Some who have heard this jewel of a recording have noted this is Shawnn’s best work to date." - Keys and Chords
"The charged, intensely passionate music crested with dulcet beauty of Monteiro's vocals makes You Are There a rapturous listening experience, highly recommended especially for connoisseurs of the genre." - James Cox (Midwest Book Review)
"...Govoni makes a bold statement with Hiding In Plain Sight, not just proving that he can hang with the best of the best, but establishing himself as a serious artist who’s just as vital a performer with as much to say as today’s jazz fest headliners and poll winners." - Ed Enright (DownBeat)

"Worth multiple listens." - George W. Harris (Jazz Weekly)

"This is genuine, at times absolutely burning, convicted hard bop balanced by a couple of lovely ballads and a couple of unexpected styles with all hands on deck, moving joyously full steam, and straight ahead. It’s a keeper." - Jim Hynes (Making A Scene Magazine)

"Highly recommended for both traditional and modern jazz appreciators, this album sounds tremendously confident and passionate, giving a good glimpse of Wyatt’s abilities as a composer and soloist." - Jazz Trail

"Wyatt’s playing is clearly influenced by Coltrane, but also by Sonny Rollins – strong, direct and melodic, coming in sharply on solos – snap, right on the button." - Matthew Wright (Jazz Journal)

With a gift for linking bold expositions and improvisations with warmhearted thoughts, this Brooklyn-based tenor saxophonist consistently demonstrates that strength and empathy, though seemingly worlds apart, are just two sides of the same coin." - The New York City Jazz Record
