Research Bulletin - August 2022 (Issue 78)

Building research capacity in Scotland's NHS is vital to support recovery and achieve our vision for the future of clinical research delivery, so it is welcome news the next round of the Chief Scientist Office's Clinical Academic Fellowships has opened for applications. This provides the opportunity for clinical professionals early in their career to undertake a PhD with individuals from a variety of different roles are encouraged to apply for the fellowships, including doctors and dentists in training, GPs, GDP’s, NMAHP's, and Healthcare Scientists. A fellowship investigating long-term treatments for epilepsy has also been announced by Epilepsy Research UK and the Medical Research Council (MRC).  
Multiple funding opportunities have also launched this month including seed funding for the advancement of precision medicine, grants to fund research that will bring early benefit for people living with Crohn’s Disease, and applications are invited from Scottish Universities to host a call for Scottish Government-funded research on long-term health outcomes for those accessing gender identity healthcare.
Event season has also kicked off with several events now open for registration. The Scottish Health Research Register (SHARE) Autumn symposium will take place on 28 September with a focus on the future of research; NRS Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Critical Care will host a 2-day event on 11-12 October, while NRS Diabetes host Transforming diabetes care in Scotland - policy, research and innovation event on 23 November 2022. From 19 - 30 September, NHS Education for Scotland, alongside the University of Highlands and Islands (UHI), NHS Highland, NHS 24, community leads and other key stakeholders from Skye, Lochalsh and South West Ross, will host the Remote and Rural Festival of Learning (FOL) with an extensive programme including sessions beneficial to those involved in clinical research.

Next round of Clinical Academic Fellowships now open
The Chief Scientist Office (CSO) of the Scottish Government has announced the latest round of their Clinical Academic Fellowship scheme, open for application until Wednesday 12 October 2022. Read more

Precision Medicine Scotland announces seed funding
Researchers can apply for up to £30,000, which must be at least match funded by an industrial partner or show a strong case for commercialisation of your research. Applications must focus on the advancement of Precision Medicine in healthcare. Read more
Funding call for research on long-term health outcomes for those accessing gender identity healthcare
Bids are invited from Scottish Universities to host a call for Scottish Government funded research on long-term health outcomes for those accessing gender identity healthcare. Read more
UK Rare Disease Research Platform (nodes) funding
Funding is available to coordinate and address tractable challenges in rare diseases and achieve a step change in the mechanistic understanding, diagnosis and therapy of rare diseases. Read more
Early Benefit for Crohn’s Disease research awards
Applications are invited for grants to be awarded in April 2023 by Crohn’s & Colitis UK, up to a maximum of £100,000 for up to two years to fund research that will bring early benefit for people living with Crohn’s Disease. Read more
Epilepsy Research UK and MRC announces new funding
Epilepsy Research UK has announced a partnership with the Medical Research Council (MRC) Nucleic Acid Therapeutics Accelerator to co-fund a fellowship investigating long-term treatments for epilepsy. Read more
Home glaucoma monitoring call for funding
The Home Glaucoma Monitoring Phase 1 Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) is open for application, funded by the Scottish Health Industry Partnership (SHIP) in partnership with the NHS Scotland innovation test beds. Read more
Transforming diabetes care in Scotland event
Hosted by NRS Diabetes, event will cover a round up of the latest diabetes research and innovation outputs, highlighting the impact of policy and reflecting on the Diabetes Improvement Plan, featuring a keynote by NHS Scotland's Deputy Chief Medical Officer. Read more
'Tomorrow's Medical World' symposium announced
This second entry in the Scottish Health Research Register and Biobanks (SHARE)'s symposium series will focus on the future of research, with a keynote from Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak, Chief Scientist (Health).

The two day event will will focus on research in critical care on day 1 and cover research in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine on day 2, catering for all research-active or research-interested roles. Read more

SHARP Scotland are now accepting submissions for the 2022 SHARP Prize, with research and/or audit projects, or clinical audit and/or service improvement projects with relevance to cardiovascular disease or diabetes sought. Read more

ENRICH Scotland has established the ‘RICH (Research In Care Homes) Voices’ patient and public involvement group, which will bring together care home staff, residents, and researchers to discuss and influence the design and delivery of research. Read more
Survey for clinicians providing chronic pain support
This University of Stirling study is looking for professionals providing support to young people (aged 18-30) with chronic pain to take part in a survey designed to understand what creative tools, if any, are used within clinical practice to communicate the experience of chronic pain.
