Happy Friday everyone!
We are nearing scholarship season. If you know a Warren County high school senior please make sure they know the scholarship application will be available starting November 1st and they have until January 15th. In addition, if you know a college student majoring in education, speech pathology, agriculture, or a healthcare related field, they might be eligible for a scholarship as well.
Would you like to know more about how the Foundation works, or how you might be able to become involved with the Warren County Community Foundation, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or call 765-764-1501.
Have a great weekend,
Capstone Grant Awarded
We recently awarded a $5,000 WHIN Capstone grant to the park at the corner of Third Street and Washington Street in Independence. First, all new swings will be put in. Then a purple dinosaur "spring rider" will be installed along with a picnic table. Next, two new basketball backboards will be installed, and finally, we will investigate installing some sort of pickleball net whether it be portable or permanent we have not yet decided. We are looking forward to giving this well-cared-for park a remodel.
NICHES Land Trust receives Community Grant
The Warren County Community Foundation awarded a grant to NICHES Land Trust in the amount of $5,100. This grant is to fund a parking lot area at Fall Creek Gorge. NICHES Executive Director Shannon Stanis said, “While NICHES completes stewardship projects and user access improvements, Fall Creek Gorge remains closed to the public. We are aiming to re-open the property in the summer of 2023. NICHES is so grateful to work with the WCCF on the re-opening of this beloved nature preserve. The funding for installing a new parking lot is critical to re-opening the preserve with improved visitor experience and safety. The strong community partnerships in Warren County make these projects deeply rewarding for all of us." The Community Foundation is excited about this summer 2023 re-opening and we will all need to be good stewards of this property once it reopens so that it will never have to close again.
Pond Management Conference a success
On October 6th, the Warren County and Fountain County Soil and Water Conservation Districts teamed up to host a Pond Management Conference at the AHW Conference Center in Williamsport. There were 43 attendees for the all-day training in how to better manage ponds on local resident properties. The Warren County Community Foundation was happy to be one of the sponsors of the event.
Seeger students participate in German Exchange Program
On Monday October 10th, 14 German students and two chaperones arrived in Warren County. They got to experience a high school football game, a Halloween barn party, Indiana Dunes, and spending time with their host families. They also took a trip to Chicago during Seeger's Fall Break. The group ended their trip by visiting Indianapolis. On Monday, October 17th, Foundation Director Michele Stucky took the group on a tour of Williamsport. The students toured AccuBurn Inc., A Better Way Food Co-Op, and went to the Williamsport-Washington Township Public Library to see all of the great Halloween decorations. Next, Judge Reece met with the group in the courtroom and talked about the Indiana Justice system and answered questions the students had, followed by a visit to the dry Williamsport Falls.
Fleming Woods Music Instruments Installed
A couple of months ago, Seeger High School Senior, Macy Smith, applied for and was awarded a grant from the SIA Foundation for outdoor music instruments. Those instruments have been installed at Fleming Woods County Park on the Red trail. When you enter the park, if you stay to the right, you will come to the marker for the red trail. The music instruments are not that far down the trail and are quite remarkable for the variety of pitches they can produce. This would make a fun stop for people of all ages!
