Getting Youth Outdoors

2015 YCC Crews on Mount Graham

Join the GWP this coming Wednesday to learn more about youth outdoor opportunities. The US Forest Service, Safford Ranger District, is going to share the numerous ongoing projects that involve getting youth outdoors.
This year the Forest Service has partnered with the Gila Watershed Partnership and the Bureau of Land Management to hire 16 youth for watershed improvement projects on Coronado National Forest, in the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area, and at GWP's Gila Native Plant Nursery. We are looking forward to a fun and educational summer for all these local youth.

Botanical Etymology

Glandularia gooddingii, or desert verbena is an attractive perennial verbena found throughout the arid Southwest. The vibrant clusters of fuchsia flowers are butterfly magnets. This xeric species provides a low-water ground cover option perfect for those of us cutting back on our yard irrigation schedules.
Glandularia, Latin Glandula, a gland (from glans [genitive glandis], an acorn –ula, the dimunitive), and –aria, pertaining to; gland-like, acorn-like, alluding to the shape of the fruits.
gooddingii, for Leslie Newton Goodding (1880-1967), American botanist and collector, student of Aven Nelson of Wyoming, one of the first botanists to collect extensively in Arizona, field biologist for the USDA, father of Charlotte Goodding Reeder, student of the grasses (Muhlenbergia).
