Structured Support Groups are back and looking for new participants, our AGM and Beating BDD Podcast.

Structured Support Groups are back and we are looking for participants!

After two successful rounds of our pilot project which has seen Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (CBT-BDD) adapted to a group setting for the first time, we are happy to announce that we will be running another programme this year as part of the project’s third phase.

The unique feature of this group is that it combines the evidence-based therapeutic approaches – the same that you would find in the NHS – with the lived-expertise of the group facilitators, which participants have said was "the most powerful element of the group".

One participant who took part in the programme told us how much the group has helped them to overcome fear and anxiety related to their appearance, which has in the past held them back:

“The group was amazing to help me see that I am not alone, to gain perspective on how BDD affects my day to day life and to find compassion for myself and the group for how it impacts us, daily."

The results from the last two have demonstrated an improvement both in BDD symptoms as well as in their overall quality of life. Because of the groups, participants have returned to work, returned to university, and even got engaged!

Hannah Lewis, who is the Project Lead for the pilot, has said the following: “I’m really pleased with how successful the first and second pilots of the structured support group has been. It has been such a privilege to work with facilitators who have shared their own experiences of BDD and inspired others on the road to recovery. It has been really wonderful to see the participants engage with the therapy and overcome their anxieties – I’m now looking forward to helping even more people to overcome their BDD.

New Episodes available on our 'Beating BDD' Podcast!

Ep 10&11 - Oliver Butcher: For this episode – the first of two – I spoke to Oliver Butcher, who’s currently in the middle of treatment for his BDD. It’s the first time he’s spoken publicly about his struggle with the condition, so we’re especially grateful for him for having the courage to come forward. You’ll find the second half of Oliver’s interview in episode 11. “If I think back to a year ago, there’s absolutely no way I would have been able to come to London [and do this recording]. There was just, go to work, come home, and that was good enough. But that’s not how I want to live my life anymore"

Ep 12 - Debbie and Daniel Butcher: In this episode, you’ll hear how Oliver's experience affected the lives of his mum Debbie and his older brother Daniel. “We can’t put into words how life has changed… When we look at Oliver now, we see a strong, determined, brave young man that has a future and can live the best life he can.”

Ep 13 - Tim Brandford-White: Tim spent many years feeling full of shame and hopelessness because of his BDD. But after just 20 sessions of specialist CBT, he says he’s recovered. In this episode, he shares what he’s learnt about getting and staying well. “The therapy gave me a sensible viewpoint of my own body and other people’s. Now, I don’t really care about how I look.”

Episodes are available on our website, our Youtube channel but the podcast is available on itunes and most podcast apps.
