This year's Veteran Flag Laying Program was met with enthusiasm and honor. At Mt Rose Cemetery, we mobilized a group of 50 members of the National Honor Society from York Catholic High School and placed over 850 flags on Veteran's graves. Joe Butler and Eric Sanger helped along with the assistance of Jeanette Craymer and Don Strausbaugh of Post 97. At South Hill Cemetery, several generations of families came, in the rain, to meticulously go up and down every row and place a flag. Volunteers demonstrated their gratitude and appreciation, on the known and unknown headstones, to our community's Jewish War Veterans. Rep. Kevin Schreiber was there to show his gratitude and honor the deceased Veterans. Please join us for a memorial service at South Hill Hebrew Cemetery on May 31st at 11 am as we continue the tradition of honoring our local Veterans.

OLDER AMERICAN MONTH 2015

In honor of the 50th anniversary of our Older Americans Act (OAA) JFS is focusing on how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact in the lives of others.
  • JFS is committed to helping individuals live longer, healthier lives in the communities of their choice for as long as possible.
  • Since 1965, the Older Americans Act has provided services that help older adults remain healthy and independent by complementing existing medical and health care systems, helping prevent hospital readmissions, and supporting some of life's most basic functions, such as bathing or preparing meals.
  • These programs also support family caregivers, address issues of exploitation, neglect and abuse of older adults.
  • We recognize the value of community engagement and service in helping older adults remain healthy and active while giving back to others.
JFS seeks to enrich the lives of individuals of all ages by:
  • Promoting and engaging in activity, wellness and social inclusion.
  • Emphasizing home  and community based services that support independent living.
  • Ensuring community members of all ages benefit from the contributions and experience of older adults.
MAZON PARTNERSHIP

JFS is pleased to announce that MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger has approved a renewal grant to JFS in the amount of $10,000. MAZON strives to end hunger in the United States and Israel. MAZON'S advocacy works to ensure that hungry people have access to nutritious food today and demands that government policies assure no one goes hungry tomorrow.http://www.mazon.org

GRAB AND BAG

Every year, the Project Manna Hunger education project in conjunction with the Hunger Walk a Thon, culminates with the Grab & Bag on the last day of Religious School. Funds raised at the Walk-a-thon were used to purchase food for the Grab and Bag. This year's Grab & Bag was distinctive in that we prepared bags that were delivered to older adults to ensure access to pantry items. TBI's 7th & 8th graders filled 70 bags with nutritious and ready made items.

From the Walk-a-thon to Grab and Bag, volunteers found great meaning and satisfaction that they had truly made a difference in our community.
