the fifty hands series, No. 36 - Melancholy

One of my teachers used to say that irony was a way of creating enough distance from the world to stay sane - particularly useful to sensitive types.
I prefer melancholy. That kind of sadness without rage and self torture, an accepting sadness. It's hard to recommend melancholy in a world that sells so much cheerfulness and positive thinking, but sometimes it is good to be in that state. Listen to a sad song, watch a sad movie, draw a melancholic creature. I feel like melancholy is a form of distance too, a nice dark corner away from the noise and bright lights.
