Hey Friend,

Thank you for continuing to join me on this journey, with under three weeks to the book launch, it's getting exciting!

Did you know that I always wanted to be a writer? True fact. But it was not always evident from the start that I would become one. When I was in high school, I was very discouraged by my English teacher. He had no belief in me and waved me off as silly when I proclaimed I wanted to be a journalist. You see, I became hooked on books at a very young age. The story of Hansel and Gretel had me captivated at the age of seven and I could only imagine what went through the writers' mind at the time. I wrote in journals from the age of thirteen and dreamed of seeing my own work on a bookshelf alongside my writing heroes.

When I decided I wanted to see out my dream, many people were like that old teacher of mine. A lot of people disbelieved, but a small few did believe and most importantly I believed.

There is a really fun movie called October Sky. It's the true story of Homer Hickam, a coal miner's son who was inspired by the first Sputnik launch to take up rocketry against his father's wishes. He burned down sheds, blew up fences, was laughed at by locals, and faced great resistance from his dad. He was so passionate and believed in what he was doing so much, that he not only succeeded, but went on to work for NASA.

Whatever your dream or passion is, go for it! Never let anyone tell you it is out of reach. But don't think it will come easy, either. In writing The Second Lap, I was confronted with many obstacles and failures and at times felt like leaving it as a pile of dusty pages in a closet. Rereading the book I found this quote that sums up what I am saying here ~
  • "I believe in hard work. I don't want the changes in my life to be cheaply obtained by chance, I want them to be earned by my own sweat."
In pursuing passion over glory, the journey becomes one of self-discovery and ultimately distills us down to who we really are.

Follow your dream, today!

Malcolm.
