Message: I am calling today to ask Senator Stewart-Cousins to bring the Fossil Fuel Divestment Act, bill number S2126A, to the Senate floor to be voted upon. A majority of state Senators are co-sponsoring this bill, making it a very passable piece of progressive climate legislation. We must stop investing in fossil fuel companies that profit off the destruction of our planet, especially when they are a bad financial risk.

Sample Tweet: We must stop investing in fossil fuel companies that profit off the destruction of our planet. It’s time to take action on the climate crisis. Senator @AndreaSCousins, please bring the Fossil Fuel Divestment Act to the Senate floor for a vote. #DivestNY #ClimateActionNow
Background:
A group of youth activists have been working up a storm to get the Fossil Fuel Divestment Act (S2126, A1536) brought to the floor and passed in the NYS legislature. The Act would make the New York State Common Retirement Fund divest their $13 billion dollars of fossil fuel investments.

The legislature has been on break during the pandemic but plans to come back in the near future to deal with the COVID-19 crisis. As important as that is, we have to remind them that the climate crisis is not on pause and we have to solve it immediately, if our youth are to have a future. (Read this article in Gotham Gazette). We want them to vote on the Fossil Fuel Divestment Act when they come back in session.

We can help by contacting Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins to bring the fossil fuel divestment act (S2126A) up for a vote in the Senate. We now have a majority (33 out of 63) of State Senators sponsoring the bill.

More than 1190 institutions with assets over $14 trillion including over 300 pension funds and governments have committed to divest from fossil fuels. New York City is in the midst of implementing a nation leading divestment commitment for its pension funds. Governor Cuomo has stated support for divestment of the state pension fund.

financial analysis by 350.org that revealed that the pension fund had lost more $1.5 billion on its investments in just 16 tar sands and fracking companies in the last year - a decrease of 60% - with much of the losses coming before the oil price crash and coronavirus pandemic. The fund has more than $12 billion invested in fossil fuel companies according to its last available listing of assets.

Please circulate this to your own lists, via social media, etc. Let's storm them with messages.
