Kolkata Project for the Hearing Impaired

Phase 1: Kolkata Hearing Camp - Sept '15

Project Purpose

The purpose of this project is to continue the Hearing Awareness Program which was started in 2015 in the areas of Bauria and Bagnan in Kolkata by continuing the screening of children and youths and testing and fitting hearing aids for those who have been found to benefit with hearing aids in these two areas.

Screening of children, youths, and in some cases adults will continue in an ongoing basis using audiologists who have been trained in India. To accomplish the screening the audiologists will need screening audiometers.

Those who fail the screening process will then be tested at a later date after visiting a doctor and an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Doctor. More sophisticated audiometers are necessary for the testing process to determine the extent of the hearing loss.

Once the type and degree of hearing loss has been determined hearing aids can then be fitted where appropriate.

The hearing aids being used will generally be recycled aids from Canada and in some cases from India. These aids will be provided free to the recipients however, batteries will be an ongoing expense.

It is planned that phase two will begin in late September and early October of 2016. The screening will be ongoing as will be the testing and fitting of hearing aids. Monitoring of the program will occur annually.

This program will provide the children with the opportunity to attend school and give them the ability to have an education and a more positive  life style while contributing to society.

Your Gift Makes a Difference

Since the recipients will generally have little or no money, the plan is to have no costs to them except for transportation to and from the clinics. In order to achieve the plan of no cost to the recipients, outside funding will be required. Items which will need to be funded include: screening audiometers, testing audiometers, an impedance bridge, otoscopes (ear lights), ear mold material, plaster to make the molds, tubing for the hearing aids, and a few additional miscellaneous but minor items.
