The Resources You Need Now

As QM’s Executive Director Dr. Deb Adair highlighted in her Open Letter to the QM Community, our members are doing an outstanding job of responding to the COVID-19 crisis. But we know there may be others — in or outside your institution — that need more help. Here are some resources:
  1. Five Tips for Remote Teaching” — tap into the extensive knowledge of Dr. Steven Crawford, District Director for the Maricopa Center for Learning and Innovation at Maricopa Community Colleges, as he shares five steps you can take now to ensure your students have the learning experience they need without overwhelming them and yourself.
  2. QM’s Emergency Remote Instruction Checklist — utilize our tiered list of considerations, tips and actionable strategies to help set students up for success during an institutional move to temporary remote instruction of classroom-based courses.
  3. Accessibility and Usability Resource Site — get information on how to address key accessibility and usability concerns with our free resource site for educators. Topics covered include: alternative text, video captions, hyperlinks, and accessible PDFs. There is also an open forum where you can ask about any accessibility concern.
Quick Tip: Making Complex Images Accessible
quick tip
Making complex images such as graphs, charts, maps, and illustrations accessible can be a challenge. According to the recently updated “Web Accessibility Guidelines Handbook” from Portland Community College, there are three best practices that can help: 1) Use a caption, 2) describe the complex image in surrounding text and 3) link out to a web page with a longer description. To learn more about how to use these best practices, check out section eight of the guide.

Present. Nominate. Attend.

Now more than ever, it’s critical that you share the work you are doing to create quality online learning environments that set students up for success. Let others know about your ideas and experiences — present at this year’s QM Connect Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. Submit your proposal by May 4. Need help? Check out the recording of Dr. Racheal Brooks’ webinar — Creating a Winning Proposal — or review recordings of some highly-rated QM Connect presentations from 2019.

And don’t forget to nominate yourself, your institution or a colleague for a 2020 “Making a Difference for Students” QM Award. Nominations are available in three categories:
  • Outstanding Impact by an Individual in Higher Education
  • Outstanding Impact by a Higher Education Organization
  • Outstanding Impact by a K–12 Individual or Organization
Nominations are due by May 8 so start the QM Awards nomination process today. Please contact us if you need help with your submission.
In Case You Missed It
CHLOE 4 report cover

Last week, QM and Eduventures Research presented results from the fourth Changing Landscape of Online Learning (CHLOE) Survey of Chief Online Officers. If you missed the webinar — or want to share it with others in your organization — the recording is now available. Check it out to discover what hundreds of institutions can tell us about mainstream online learning, including faculty preparation for teaching online, online program management (OPM) partnerships, online student support, online student orientation, online enrollment, proctoring arrangements and more.
