Sprint Qualifiers at the Vernon NorAm, December 10, 2016
News from Alannah MacLean, Walden Member & National Team Development Centre Athlete in Thunder Bay.

Alannah MacLean - December 22, 2016

Following the pre-Christmas NorAms, I have decided to take a break from competition until February. I headed out west November 17th for training in Canmore and some tune-up races at the Alberta Cup hosted the last weekend of November. My first race effort wasn't exactly what I was looking for because I was still in pain during the race from the disc herniation. The first NorAm/Supertour in Bozeman, MT was cancelled from lack of snow, so our team headed to Silverstar, BC for an extra week of training prior to the first NorAm of the season December 10th-11th. Silverstar is cross-country ski mecca for early season snow and one of the largest trail systems in Canada, so it was an amazing place to get in some training at altitude to prepare for the races. We did a couple of time trials and race efforts leading up to the NorAm weekend to prepare for the start of the competitive season. Unfortunately, when I attempted the classic sprint qualifier on December 10th, my back seized and I had to pull out of the heats. The pain made me realize that my body still isn't ready to handle back-to-back races. I wanted to be okay so badly that digging myself a hole and not getting the recovery I needed to race fast. That realization prompted the decision to come back to Thunder Bay a week early and miss the Rossland, BC NorAm.  Now, I have been getting treatment regularly with our integrated support team of health practitioners so that I can come back stronger and faster. It was a tough decision to forego Rossland and now the rest of January for recovery, but I know that my body is not ready yet for full time racing. My goal is to come back when I can race without pain. Until then, I'll be spending time doing upward dog and swimming (but hopefully not drowning) to minimize the impact on my spine.

Racing Team Update
Head Coach, Marlee Clement

We have one athlete heading up to Thunder Bay for the first O-Cup of the season right after Christmas from December 28th-30th! We would like to wish Josh good luck! The competition will consist of skate sprints, classic interval race and a skate mass start race.

In December we had a three day on snow training camp. During the camp the athletes participated in two time trials, worked on technique, participated in a mini waxing workshop and lastly spent time focusing on race plans and warm ups. Here's what two of our athletes had to say about the camp;

Saturday was a test of speed where we were put up to the challenge of skate sprints. With a qualifier, semis and a final there was many a chance to catch our stride. The grueling 1km course brought us up the para nordic delight where we had an excellent chance to nail our transition from one skate to offset.By the time we were done all with our heats, we were pooched. But our day didn't stop there. We finished the back half of the day with loads of technique work to improve our sprints and all around performance. After all was said and done we debriefed and started recovery because we knew we had one more tough day to go. - Kelly Thompson

The last day of our camp was focused on classic technique. The temperature was a balmy -21 degrees, so we decided to move the racing to the afternoon and do technique work in the morning. We worked on our classic striding and recorded videos of our skiing for form analysis. I found this is to be one of the most helpful parts of the weekend to learn about improvements I can make with my technique. In the afternoon it had warmed up a bit, so we all raced a 5km time trial. It was not the easiest time trial with the slow conditions and fatigue from the weekend of skiing, but it was still lots of fun! The time trial was a great way to wrap up a very educational and fun training camp! - Allison Caswell
