If there was ever an essential condiment for fresh, simple seafood, it would be cocktail sauce. 

Prawn cocktail, the dish where cocktail sauce originates, was originally served with shrimp hanging around the edge of a cocktail glass. This is the origin of the name.

This deft mixture of ketchup, chili sauce, horseradish and lemon juice is the classic accompaniment to fresh or fried shrimp, but is delicious on everything you’d find on the shellfish tower.

Here at Motts Channel Seafood we stock a few of our favorite, ready-to-serve sauces but we also encourage our customers to experiment. Maybe tailor the horseradish and hot sauce to your heat level, and switch up the flavors by using sriracha or a Mexican hot sauce like Cholula instead of the traditional Tabasco.

This is a recipe for those that want to add some bold flavors to their traditional cocktail sauce. Recipe and photo courtesy of AllRecipes.com
 
Makes 6 servings.

 Ingredients 
  • 2 pounds Fresh Motts Channel Seafood shrimp,cooked, peeled and deveined
  • 1 tablespoon crushed garlic
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups tomato and clam juice cocktail
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce, or to taste
  • 1/4 cup prepared horseradish
  • salt to taste
  • 1 ripe avocado - peeled, pitted and chopped
 Instructions
  • Place the shrimp in a large bowl. Stir garlic, red onion, and cilantro. Mix in tomato and clam juice cocktail, ketchup, lime juice, hot pepper sauce, and horseradish. Season with salt. Gently stir in avocado.
  • Cover, and refrigerate 2 to 3 hours. Serve in one large bowl or ladle into individual bowls.

Got-Em-On Live Bait Club hosts the Cape Fear Disabled Fishing Tournament at the Kure Beach Pier. The event, which draws close to 300 participants, provides a day of fishing and food for those with disabilities. HOURS: 7:30am to Noon.
